I went back three pages and saw no mention of this item.  In the latest issue of American Handgunner JD Jones has an article about the .620 JDJ!!   :o  That's right, he's making a .620 caliber barrel for the Encore, EGADS!!  This sucker fires a 1050 gr. lead slug at velocities up to 1200 FPS!!!  I guess its kind of a poor man's anti-tank weapon!  The BATF sez its a "destructive device" and has therefore slapped a $200 federal tax on it.  So, I'm think'n we're looking at a $500 Encore barrel.  Well, if you just HAVE to have the biggest and baddest put your name on the waiting list.

Pretty incredible.  I wish they would have included some pictures of him touching off a few rounds.  With a label like "destructive device" I think they owe us a follow up article in the next issue.

JD has gotten exemptions to the "destructive device" classification before and I suspect he'll get one in this case as well.  That aside, I don't want to fire a 1,000+ grain slug from my Encore anyway but it's interesting to see others push the limits.

Read about it a while back in the SIXGUNNER, I think. I'll bet the cost is over $1000. I checked on a 50 Alaskan probably 4 years ago and it was $1000. JD said the 50 Cal slow twist barrels are EXPENSIVE.

Back at the 2004 IHMSA Internationals I saw two guys from Brazil with SSK caps on and stopped to talk to them. They had driven down to JD's and proceeded to tell me about shooting a 50 Alaskan off the back porch!!!!!

I have an encore with a 15" barrel that shoots full house 600 nitro express loads. It shoots 900 grain bullets at 1670 ft/sec for about 5600 ft. lbs. The gun weighs 5 lbs and 13 oz. and it kicks like a big mule!  It will shoot 1040 grain bullets at 1230 ft/sec. They don't kick as bad as the full house nitro loads.

Someone sent me a video of an Encore with a nitro express barrel being fired.  It was a while ago, but I remember that after the trigger was pulled the grip was still in the shooter's hand but the barrel was a distance behind him, he also seemed quite dazed by the experience.  There was also a video of a 50 BMG single shot on a regular rifle stock configuration; the shooter was sitting and he was thrown over the back of his shooting bench, apparently too light of a combo.

The 600 nitro pistol that I have was shot by a range instructor that would not listen to  any sound advice on how to shoot it. The gun went flying over his shoulder and damn near took his head off. I shot it and was able to hold on to it with out any trouble, but I shoot alot of big bore stuff and have for years. I posted a couple of short videos shooting it and a 600 overkill rifle over on A.R. forum. It is under big bore rifles and is titled Kamikazzee and bid dog shoot some bis stuff. It is also on nitro express forums.The video shows the gun in full recoil. One video is shooting a 1040 grain bullet at 1230 ft/sec, and the other is shooting a 900 grain bullet at 1670 ft/sec. You gotta hold on tight!!

So YOU'RE the guy ! That video certainly made the rounds on the internet, and still shows up on my screen, from time to time, forwarded by somebody. Sure has caused a lot of head shaking and comment around the globe. If the shooter shown is a shooting instructor, he should probably learn that listening is an important part of teaching.

I agree with you. I shot the 600 nitro pistol this spring. I bought the 600 and the 3 1/4" 50 140 sharps pistols from Kamakazzii. He shot the gun the same way I shoot my heavy recoiling encores, with w tight two handed grip. By doing this, you can somewhat control the gun. As my video shows, the gun does not have to fly back behind your head. It is truly a handful though. Not something to go plinking with often.
