Post war Spanish Mauser

I have a 98 large ring barreled action from the LaCaruna Arsenal dated 1958.  It has already been drilled and tapped with a new bolt handle and low scope safety.  Is this action strong enough to be built into a .35 Whelan or equivalent  caliber or do I need to upgrade to a stronger action?

I bought this item at an estate sale for a very low price and can always make it into a .257 Robts. or 7X57.

 You can make a 98 Mauser into any caliber in the book.

 I would consider having a professional check it's hardness, as Spanish Mausers, and LaCoruna's in particular, were a little soft.

The original caliber was 7X57(OK), and some were converted to .308 - but I wouldn't recommend shooting full-charge, high-intensity loads in one.
If you handload, I would try to keep pressures low- under 40,000 PSI.

FYI.  The action has the original barrel still attached and it is 8X57 caliber.

 8x 57 is one of if not my favorite cartidges..
I wonder why nobody makes a 35x57?

    They do and did it's called 9x57mm Mauser
