Top break single shot history?
« on: April 25, 2007, 02:12:23 PM »
Would anyone happen to know the history of top break single shot rifles?
I know top break revolvers and shotguns date back to the 1800s, and the British had their double barrel elephant guns, but I cannot find any history for any old guns similar to the H&R handi rifle.

There are many types of break action rifles and these are especially popular in Europe. Blaser, RAF of France and Chapuis still make and seel break action rifles and of course Ferlach the gun making district of Austria has planty of small makers who have and still will make you a break action rifle. Lots of British Gun makers of the 19th century made and offered Break action rifles and Rook rifles were common as break actions.

During the past couple years there were articles in the Doublegun and Single Shot Journal where the authors addressed the pros and cons of break-over versus falling-block single shot rifles for hunting. I think the advantages of the falling block were that one could reload without taking the gun from his shoulder. The advantage of the break-over was better accessibilty for loading and unloading. In addition, I think the break-overs are handy in that one can break them over for safety when encountering others or walking on unsure ground. I think the falling blocks are better for target shooting since they are stiffer and brass should last more reloads, but I don't shoot enough ammo when hunting that brass life is a major concern. Anyway, I think breakover single-shot rifles are great for hunting. I have bolt actions and and others, but most of my hunting is with Thompson-Center TCR's because they work so well.
