Okay, got it together, and it passed the function test.  However, when I tried to chamber a round, it jammed. The cartridge gets about halfway into the barrel and stops.  Any ideas?

Just take a long, slow look a the gun before you give up on it. Something as simple as a fouled chamber could be at fault. Use a brass brush and cleaner until everything's shiny. Then look again. Maybe there's crud under the extractor, so a rim won't slide under. Maybe dirt in the magazine, a burr on the follower, a problem with the magazine catch, or bent lips.

I love this sort of challenge. I "repaired" an Iver Johnson .22 revolver with a light hammer fall by removing a grass stem from the between the hammer and breech face, and got a Mossberg 500 to feed reliably by expanding the carrier about 1-2mm with a couple of pliers.

Before you decide to use it as a trot line weight, sent it to me.

First, check the function with round nose ammo like the CCi minimag (not hollow point). If it doesn't work, check the firing pin and channel. Clean and debur both.......when the pin gets dirty or burred up, it will not allow proper feeding.
 Consider a throat job, many have done it; slightly bevel the bottom and sides of the chamber.

Thanks y'all.  Actually, I think I may have a magazine problem.  I loaded it up, but of course the rifle won't even chamber a round.  However, when I was taking the rounds out of the mag, I had to turn it upside down and shake it to get the cartridges to come to the top for removal.  I'm not a gunsmith, but I would say the magazine spring is shot.
