That weight bullet was quite normal for 50 cal. rifles, and some even lighter.  The 50-2.5 Sharps fired a bullet about that weight.  My 500 BPE uses a 370 gr. bullet and I have a mold for a 340 grainer.   That's also why the 50's lost out on the buffalo ranges so quickly to the 40's and 45's.  To achieve the same downrange ballistics with the 50's as the 40's and 45's got one had to fire a much heavier projectile.  Big for a 50 cal. rifle starts at about 600 grs.  The 50 BMG fires a 710 gr. bullet at 2700 fps,  thus it's incredible downrange ballistics.

Still, yup, that's a big bullet!

From what I know of them, they're all cartridge bullets, most, if not all are listed as too hard to stuff down a bore, and many are gas checked. There are several other manufacturers that offer big muzzleloading bullets, while not readliy available like Cabelas tho.

quick is most probably spot on regarding those bullets and muzzleloaders.  If you're lookin' fer a real muzzleloading projectile one needs look no farther than the patched round ball.   History says it all.

If you want a GREAT bullet for a 50 cal 1-28 GM look at Hornady Great plains 410. These will get the job done.  Ron

thanks guys
i e-mailed Montana bullets, they say that cabelas does not handle their bullets at this time,
so i guess that i saw something else.
i have seen the Hornaday 410s at cabelas, will try.
i have no problem with round balls other than their must be some reason they started making conicals, and i like em.

Those listed on their web site say they're not for muzzleloading rifles, they only show one 450gr in .510" diameter, is that whatcha bought?

You might have a VERY HARD time getting them down the barrel. If they are made out of Anything but soft lead I would not start one down.     Ron

Ron as you know with the change of rules in Idaho - I too had to do a lot of searching for what I thought would be the best conical from my GM SS LRH barrel.   I tried several different Hornady bullets, Buffalo, 460 New Excuses,  - non of them were as consistent as the 460 grain MTNEx from Bull Shop.  I can consistently shoot this bullet at a 100 with open sites and stay within 3" of POI.

These bullets are "slip fit" (no short starter needed - just thumb pressure) and the lube Dan uses is the best I have found - in all temperatures.  I use a 460 sized @ .503 for both the GM barrel and the factory Renegade barrel

I shoot them in the GM barrel with 90 grains of T7-3f with a .125x.510 shot card with an velocity of 1500 fps.  The bullet has a BC of .202 which is pretty decent for a lead conical.  I was really curious to see if I could shoot that big (long) of a bullet from a 1/48 twist and have it perform as well as it was from the 1/28 GM barrel.... It was a little erractic with 90 grains from a short Renegade barrel but @ 80 grains it settled right down and shot great.  Now with either gun I can set "clay pigeons" out at various ranges from 75 to 125 and consistently break them - 1 shot one bird - I'm thinking I am a sniper....

Here is a ballistic sheet for them with 90 grains... check out the energy....

Here is a pic of some of Dan's offerings - and he is meticulous about sizing his bullets....

Here is an old target, when I was first getting started....

If you have not tried these yet - might want to consider them....

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

Ain't nuthin' on the planet that ain't 'er cain't be kilt with a round ball.   Shore there's a reason fer them conicals.....ballistics won't deny that.  But, er ye huntin' traditional 'er ain't ye?  Now don't go tellin me how fer back them conicals goes.....i know thet......but they durn shore weren't common 'er normal.  Thet an' I'd like to see ye stuff them thar cat'ridge boolits down a muzzleloader.

I think referring to a counter clerk at Cabelas as an 'Outfitter' is giving them far, far too much credit.  ;D

You have to know the diameter of your bore and the diameter of the projectiles that will fit best to know if you can use a particular projectile in a particular bore or not.

Even among round balls, there are several diameters for a .45cal alone...ie: .440s and .445s are commonly used in .45cal ML rifles...a logical conclusion would be that you could buy a .45cal Ruger Old Army revolver and use the same balls, but no, it uses larger .457" diameter balls.

Hornady Great Plains bullets are excellent, made for muzzleloading rifles and give good accuracy...TC Arms also makes a line of Maxi-Hunters and Maxi-Ball conicals of various weights per caliber.

Just as an extra piece of information for what it's worth, unless you're going after Grizzly or Moose, the .50cal/.490 round ball will take deer size game every time you pull the trigger...have a flatter trajectory, are more accurate, a fraction of the cost of big conicals, and won't punish you with heavy recoil...

Roundball, you might want to rethink the flatter trajectory. Round balls fall off a LOT faster than a conical. They also don't have the energy that a conical has. When it comes to hunting big game, I want more than enough energy for the job at hand. Round balls are fine to 50 or 75 yards but I don't personally care for them. If someone wants to use them I don't care, but they are not as good as a conical at say 125 yards on a large mule deer or a elk.

Well, I made a point about energy when I mentioned big game like grizzly, moose, etc.

I went on to make a point about the .50cal ball being plenty for up to deer size game.

I'm used to discussing round balls in the context of them being a 100yd or less projectile...never thought about 125 yard shots...I certainly wouldn't ever shoot a .50cal ball at a deer 125 yards away...

the thing about wrestling with a pig is you have to be willing to bite his ear real hard the he will follow you anywhere, that is if you want a pig following you.
went back to Cabelas they exchanged the bullets, so i am ok.
OUTFITTERS is what Cabelas calls the people that work there, so i'm told,
no store that i have found, i the DFW metro-plex has much in the way of bullets for muzzle loaders, have Buffalo in 245gr and T/C in 320 but i wanted to try some of the 410-460's
guess i will have to order.
