.223 with 1 in 12"

Greetings.

I've heard NEF guns are tack drivers.  I'm thinking of getting a companion gun in .223 for my AR when I don't want to lug a 24" bull barrel AR into the woods for a quick yote hunt.  I'm concerned about a one in 12 twist rate.  I like to shoot the heavy bullets, in the 62 grain range.  Will they stabilize in a 12" twist?

The short answer is no.  They don't typically do well with anything over 55 gr. 


There are some newer barrels out with a 9 twist but I haven't shot one.  From what I heard the 9 twist barrels weren't much better with the longer bullets but I don't have any first hand experience with that so I'll let the guys shooting the 9 twist barrels respond to that.

Dan, as was said, in general the 1:12" twist barrels won't shoot anything much heavier than 55gr, in fact they pack a notice with every .223 Remington rifle to that effect. There are always exceptions to the rule tho, the 63gr Sierra Varminter  #1370, Winchester 64gr PP are a couple that have a good track record of shooting good in the 1:12", and a couple members even got 68gr-70gr and 75gr to shoot good in em, but for every one that did, there's dozens that didn't, so the only way to know is try em and see. ;D

I think you will have a hard time finding a 1-12 unless it's just sitting in a shop some where . I haven't heard of anybody getting one from the major supplier in a while. Quick would know better than me though. I've got some 69gr sierra match kings loaded up that shoot very well out of my 1-9. Kurt

The 1 in 12's are the normal Handi twist , the 1 in 9's are the ones that are hard to find and i think i remember that even H&R has stopped making them for the fact that they do not shoot the heavier bullets as they thought they would .

The 1 in 9's were in the Fluted 24" and some of the 22" Bull barrels also for awhile , Tim would know what exact models and years .  ???

Sorry, Stimpy, but there's not any real ryhme or reason to figuring out when and what a barrel is by year of mfr, they started the fluted barrels with a 1:9", then switched back mid year 2005, then said all 2006 barrels would be 1:9", then didn't, or did then switched back. And as you said, someone posted that they had switched back to 1:12" permanently.

Soooooo, the only way to know whatcha have is to check it with a cleaning rod and jag, info in the FAQs will show how, H&R doesn't even know what barrels are which!!  ::)

I stand corrected I thought it was the other way around . Makes me feel even luckier now cause that 22"1-9 bull that I got from wally world(sports south ) I think is a tack driver and I am able to shoot so far up to 69gr haven't tried any thing heavier yet but I will. Kurt

I got some specs on the 223 barrels this morning, current production barrels are being made by Marlin in 1:9" right-hand twist, lands are .219"-.221" and groove is .2240"-.2255".  ;)

The Superlight barrel is still 1:12" until they run out of them, then it too will be 1:9". ;)
