May Postal Match
« on: April 06, 2007, 09:08:03 AM »
The May Postal Match is ON.  Please review rules below to avoid issues.  I have the targets made, could use someone to post them for me so I don't have to take time to set something up to post them on.  PM me if you can do this and I'll send them to you.  The five-bull target is for open, unrestricted class only.  The single bull will serve for all others.  I will act as tabulator for now.

GENERAL RULES FOR ALL CLASSES
-All rifles loading from the muzzle are legal, no caliber or sabot restrictions, no powder restrictions.
-Range will be 100 yards, except where noted.
-No time limit will be applied; however, once shooting on a target has commenced it must be finished during the same range session.
-A shooter can compete in as few or as many classes as desired.
-Targets must be shot during the month of the current competition; ie, those targets posted as May targets must be shot during the current month of May.  Scores must be posted to the appropriate thread by the end of the 5th day of the month following (ie, by midnight June 5th for May targets).
-Adults must be registered Graybeard Outdoors posters and should post under their usual pseudonym.  Minors can shoot, and an adult may post their scores for them.  To Post a minor's score, use YOUR pseudonym with a "-M1" after.  Use a higher number for each minor, and assign the same identifier to the minor for each target/month they shoot.  So if I were to have 2 minors under me, I would designate them AndyHass-M1 and AndyHass-M2.

SCORING RULES
-For 5-spot targets, the shot must strike the intended bullseye.  If it hits an unintended bulleye, score "0" for that shot and mark it as such on the target.  Use a 3rd target to make up for the wasted bullseye.  If two shots appear on the same bulleye of a 5-spot target, the lowest scoring of the two will count and a "0" will be recorded for the other shot.
-A bullet must only break the plane of the outside of a scoring ring to be scored at the higher value.  Lines count towards the higher score at that junction. A bullet of the same caliber as that shot at the target can be inserted into questionable shots to reveal if the shot did indeed break the plane.
-Shooters will report their score on their honor.  However, targets must be saved and in the case of a very close finish the tabulator can request mailing of the involved targets for a score check.
-The number of "X" will be used to break ties.  A shot that hits in the "X" center circle counts as 10 points and one "X".  A target with 45 points total and 3 "X"s will be reported in the format "45-3X"

OPEN CLASS, UNRESTRICTED REST
-No restrictions on sights
-Any type of rest can be used, as long as the rifle is not held in any type of clamp or vise and the stock recoils against the shooter's shoulder (ie no recoil boxes).
-A five-spot target, to be posted here, is to be used.  Each round will require 10 shots, therefore 2 full targets.  Max score is 100-10X.

OPEN CLASS, 3-POSITION
-No restrictions on sights.
-Each round will be comprised of 15 shots-- 5 shots each prone, kneeling, and standing.  A 5-spot target will be used for prone (1 shot each bull) and a single-bullseye target used for kneeling and standing (5 shots at the single bull).  So max score will be 150-15X.
-Absolutely no form of rest except the shooter's body and a standard sling may be used in any position.

IRON CLASS, UNRESTRICTED REST
-No glass allowed in sights, obviously no magnification -- only iron sights (standard leaf/post, peep).
-Any type of rest can be used, as long as the rifle is not held in any type of clamp or vise and the stock recoils against the shooter's shoulder (ie no recoil boxes).
-A single bull target will be used.  A full round will consist of 2 targets with 5 shots taken on each.

IRON CLASS, 3-POSITION
-No glass allowed in sights, obviously no magnification -- only iron sights (standard leaf/post, peep).
-A full round will consist of 15 shots-- one target of 5 shots from each position (prone, kneeling, standing); a single bull target will be used.
-Absolutely no form of rest except the shooter's body and a standard sling may be used in any position.

200 YARD OPEN CLASS, UNRESTRICTED REST
-Same rules as open class unrestricted rest above, but range is 200 yards.
-A single bullseye target will be used.
-One round will consist of 2 targets of 5 shots each for a total of 10.

300 YARD OPEN CLASS, UNRESTRICTED REST
-Same rules as open class unrestricted above, but range is 200 yards.
-A single bullseye target will be used.
-One round will consist of 2 targets of 5 shots each for a total of 10.

Anyone have a place I can post the targets?  They are done, I just haven't had time to search out a place to post them where they are publicly available.

"300 YARD OPEN CLASS, UNRESTRICTED REST

I'm assuming the 200 is a typo in the instructions.

This sounds like fun. If I get a chance to go shooting on one of my visits back home I will give it a shot (pun intended). I'm on a job till the end of July and only get to go home about once a month.

Good luck to all who participate.

It's better to shoot for the sky and come a bit short than to shoot for the ground and hit every time. After all, the ground is just a place to start, the sky's the limit.

Scratch that, I have uploaded the targets to a public site.  One target (5-spot) is for the 100yd Open unrestricted class (ie 100 yd scope off a bench).  The other target is for everything else.  Try these links:

Post your scores (ie 95-3X etc) with the division the score is for (ie Open Unrestricted 100 yd) in this thread, I'll tabulate scores at month's end.

Is no one shooting this? I expected to see some scores posted by now.

I had planned on shooting a round or two but have only been home once this month and didn't make it out to the range in the 2 days I had. I hope to get out in June or July if things work out with this out of town job I'm on. Will be out of the loop until the first weekend in Aug. but hope to do a range session or two on trips back home to visit the family. Hopefully there is still some interest in shooting this 'for fun' competition.

I fully intended to shoot in it, but it's been a crazy month.  My grandpa died in the last week of April, a couple of days before my B-day.  I closed on a new house the first week in May, moved the 2nd week, spent the last two weeks getting things the way the we want them, AND changed jobs too (now self-employed).  PHEW!  I'm on vacation next week (man do I need it), so I plan on shooting for June this weekend, or maybe on Monday, depending on the weather.

I may be going back home this weekend so if my honey do list isn't too long I will try to get out and make some smoke.

first couple of shots were great, i had 1 in the nine ring, and one in the x-ring, then everything went to hell.
total group size was........12.53" :o
needless to say, i'll take a redo ;D

I wasn't able to get to the range this weekend. The weather was bad when I did get time so I will have to try again some other day.

Making a 400m track on my property took priority over the shooting range, so I don't know if I'll make it this month either.  One can hope...

I finally got out earlier this week and did some shooting but man was it hot. It was above 90 and I was at an unfamiliar range sitting at about 8000 feet. I needed to sight in a new scope on my in-line which took longer than normal, about a dozen shots at 30 yards to get it close. Since I only had 20 bullets for that gun I stopped there and didn't try any contest targets. I then tried some new bullets in my Lyman GPH (I had run out of my usual bullets). The new ones were printing similar to the regular ones so I moved out to 100 yards. I tried the Lyman out and at first wasn't hitting the target. Made some adjustments and finally hit paper in the circle but high and right. Tried to adjust the sights just a bit and must have over compensated because I missed the target. Made another adjustment and hit paper but below the circle. I made one more adjustment up and hit center high in the 5 ring. At this point I was thinking good, just one click down and I should be there. NOT, I don't know what happened to it but the next two shots were below the box that the target was taped to. After the first of those two shots I thought I could see a hole near the center through my binocs so I shot a second shot. Turns out the hole I thought I saw was from debris that had been thrown up by the shot hitting low.

At this point I had been roasting in the hot sun for more than 4 hours and didn't have the heart to stay and start all over again. I may try to get out early Saturday morning before it gets too hot and give it one last try for this month, otherwise I will have too wait for next month when I can get my hands on my new order of bullets. They are at my house in NM and I'm working in CO.

Good luck to any others who are braving the hot summer sun to shoot in this fun shoot.

Well I didn't go to the range on Saturday, I decided to drive back to NM and see my family and pick up my new shipment of bullets. I don't have to be at work till Wed so I'm taking the kids to the gun range Monday morning so they can get some practice for their hunts and I can try a few contest targets. I will report back if I get anything worth mentioning.

Well my older son did pretty good at 50 yards (1" group) but not so well at 100yards, just needs more practice. My younger son was having some problems at 50 yards (4" groups) but needs to work on his form consistency a bit and that will improve. I plan on taking them both to the range a few times a month till their hunts to work out the problems.

I didn't get a lot of time to shoot due to working with them. I did try the new batch of bullets in the Lyman and they looked good at 25 yards (1 hole grouping) but when I went out to 100 they were spreading out to about 6" (it was a bit windy so that may have been some of it). I may need to try a wad under these conical and see if it helps. I didn't get around to shooting the inline so I save that one for another day.

I had to cut the day short due to a phone meeting with my boss that was scheduled, it was getting hot by lunch time anyway so it was a good thing. Will see if I can get another range session going in the next week or so.

BTW, is anyone else planning on shooting this match. I guess if I'm the only one that means I win every month. ;D
