.223 ammo

I know that the handis like winchester whitebox, but waht about the russian stuff, from Bear and Wolf and Barnaul? reason being i want to buy alot of .223 for a little as possible for a .223 H&R once i get home.

also any warnings on shooting 5.56 through the .223 handi? I know there is also a difference between 7.62NATO and .308 and my .308 handi had no problems with 7.62NATO

The gun comes with a warning to never shoot 5.56 ammo through it. It may or may not fire but you better bring you a rod to eject the empties.

When i first got my 223 handi , i tried just about all the cheap ammo just to see what would happen . Got 2 results , patterend like a shotgun and spent most of the time pounding out stuck cases .

Spend the extra money and get the better ammo , Trust me .

If I remember right, my old 1:12 223 Handi shot 3" or so with Wolf.  There isn't any cheap 223 to be had.  The best deal going seems to be the Federal 50gr HP value packs at Wal-Mart for more or less $55/200 pack.

With the new faster twist I would try the 55 grain and 62 grain Wolf.  If you can find it, they are only $4 or so for 20 so you wouldn't be out very much.  It can't hurt to try it in your individual rifle.  I think that failure to eject/EXTRACT would be a bigger issue than how they shoot.

dang its a little dissapointing, i wanted to try some M855 SS109 penetrator rounds. You think a gunstore would give me $200+ for a Saiga.223?

if i get a 7mm-08 i could use heavier bullets for deer, are there 7mm varminting bullets?

If you're limited to factory ammo, the 7mm-08 wouldn't be the best combination chambering, a 243 would be a better choice.

Hornady makes 7mm Vmax in 120gr and a 100gr HP.

The only "cheap" 223 ammo I had any luck with in a handi was ultramax reloads.  The 55fmj stuff can be had pretty cheap ($10.90/50 rounds) the 40 NBT load shot good as well but was more expensive, they also load sierra 52hp's and 50gr TNT's.  If you can find it sale priced it's a great deal.  Natchez usually has the fmj stuff on sale for $10 something per 50 rounds a few times a year.  I usually buy 1,000 rounds when I see it on sale.  The last time I bought some it was $10.89/50.  If you reload there is an added bonus in that all of it comes in 1x LC brass so you have a good supply of quality brass when you are finished.

Ummm, that was then, this is now!! All .223 ammo that used to be cheap, isn't anymore except the milsurp stuff, that's back when Win White Box was available which it isn't any more.  Ultramax used to be $18 per 50 locally at Sportsmans, now it's $25 when they have it, which isn't often. Cabelas still has it, but it's $25 a box. The 40gr NBT shoots real good in mine, almost as good as the WWB.

I don't know how much truth there is to this, but, I've been told by a manager at Academy Sports that the WWB .223 will be available again before October. My guess is, if that happens, it will be much higher priced than before. I figure about $20-$25 for the 40 rd.Varmint Pack. Still not bad but not like the $10.99-$14.99 I was paying last year.

I guess when your used to paying $28.00 to $55.00 a box for of 20 for the bigger guns...$8.00 a box for 20 is pretty cheap now isn't it?? I use the ultra-max with 55gr Nosler bullets, and they shoot good.  I also use the 5.56 NATO stuff, does not group as well, but shoots fine.  Never had any problems with them ejecting.

Are you considering reloading? maybe try a lee anniversary reloading kit and a set of dies, I have seen alot of people spend alot of money on all the different factory loads and still not be satisfied with accuracy, You can get the kit and dies for around 100 bucks and make some really accurate loads.

I've had no problems with the 5.56 white box stuff a buddy gave me, but I prefer to shoot .223.  and I discovered when I tried to reload them (5.56) that I can't get my 26.2 grains of varget in them and had to dial it back a bit.

The Ultramax with NBT, or TNT's is usually a good bit higher in price.  This fmj stuff can still be had pretty cheap.  I've been told they use speer bullets in this "cheap" stuff and sierra's in their more expensive stuff.  This cheap 55fmj shot just as well as any of the other ultramax loads for me in 4 different 223 rifles.

I was getting the nosler bt 50gr for $100/250 rounds online, but I had it with a free shipping and handling.  That makes all the difference when buying online. If I up the number of rounds it gets down to about .36 a round.  I have not found anything cheaper that shoots as well. I am looking in the wisconsin cartridge for a box or two and see how they shoot. As far as wolf, mil surp, or any other cheap ammo.  My handi hated them.  Like stimply said, looks like I threw some 00 buck at the target.  I will pay a little extra for the accuracy, and I like what the bt bullets due to a groundhog at 200 yards.  Let us know if you find anything cheaper.  I am always willing to up my supply.
