17 HMR barrel for Encore
« on: July 17, 2007, 03:08:07 PM »
Hello,
I wasn't sure if I should post here or on the TC forum. But I thought it would be more appropriate here.
I'd like to get a 17 HMR rifle. As I have an Encore rifle already, just getting an extra barrel is a natural option. Anyone here has any experience with the Encore barrels in 17 HMR, 24" or 28" (Pro Hunter barrel)?
Is a 28" barrel "too long" for the little 17 round? Won't the bullet be loosing velocity at that length instead of gaining it?
Any feedback will be appreciated.

Thank you,
Marc

You know I've often heard this claimed with rimfire rounds, But I've chronographed 22LR form 20" barrels and my 28" CZ452 Super Exclusive. I usually find no real difference in velocities between the two. With the averageb usually being within 40 FPS either way some faster sometimes slower from the ammo manufacturers specs.

Don't forget besides the barrel unless you have it already you will need the rimfire breech block assembly that changes it from a centerfire to a rimfire. If you do not have that might just be cheaper to get a Marlin or a Savage or some other brand.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

On the new T/C encore rimfire barrels the bore is offset from the centerline of the barrel negating the need for an offset breach block.

How interesting I stand corrected last I looked you needed a adaptor. To bad they only have that for the 17 HMR and the LR. Be nice if they had it for the other rimfires too.

I believe it was Virgin Valley that did a the test on barrel length vrs velocity. Their conclusion was that the optimum length was between 18"-19". Longer or shorter and it lost speed.   KN
