Anyone use hp bullets in 357 Handi?--hogs or whitetail
« on: July 14, 2007, 06:10:36 PM »
I know some learned people have suggested SP only for the 357 Max, but has anyone used HP bullets on whitetail deer and hogs?

There just aren't any 158 or 180 SP bullets that I have heard much about.  Sierra has a 158 SP Sports Master, Hornady has NOTHING, Winchester has nothing, and Remington has nothing.  Hornady has the .358 caliber bullets, the 180gr SSP in particular.

So.  125, 140, 158, 180 hollow points?  Any experience?

Not a  Handi but a reasonable fact simile stainless steel Rossi in 357 Mag, and not a deer or pig but a wild goat.  The load I used on my wild billygoat was the aluminum cased CCI BLAZER 158 Jacketed Hollow Point which entered the rear ham, ran the length of the body finally lodging in the front shoulder blade.  This was at 150 yards and these billys average about 100 pounds max.  This bullet had a decent mushroom and weight retention.  On game any bigger and I too would prefer a JSP over a JHP.

Bluebayou,
This is not personal experience, or first hand info from me, but it has some observations about the 357 Max. There might be something interesting for you in it. http://specialtypistols.ottllc.com/sp10.html

Quick put me on to this site yesterday when he knew I was looking for similar info.

Cheers

Are you looking only for loaded ammo or bullets to reload?

Juast a QUICK look thru Cabelas, I found,

GRIZZLY Ammo in 357Mag 158 WFN-GC. load, Buffalo Bore has one too 357mag 180 LFN-GC and so doesMagTec 357 Mag 158 SJSPFN.

As for bullets to load your self.

HORNADY has a 158 & a 125 FP in the XTP line
SIERRA has a 158SP
SPEER has a 158 SP
Then there are a number of LEAD bullet MFG ers that would also work well as long as you get hard cast gas checked bullets.

NOSLER has a 180 HP but it is a Partition.

The number one reason for the FP/SP recomendations in the MAXIMUM is because of overexpansion. The MAG has less velocity and is not as prone to this problem. For Whitetails you will likely be just fine with the heaver 158HP bullets out there. Now hogs, as they get bigger, they get exponantially tougher. So or them,  I would stay with the heavest bullets in SP/FP.

Last year i used a 158gr sp American eagle (federal cheap ammo) on a doe at about 70 yds with my taurus 66 she didn't take a step. I have a handi 357 max that i LOVE i will try it on a deer this year.

I have a couple of boxes of the American Eagle 158 SP so that is my fallback position.

I am looking for bullets not loaded cartridges.  I didn't see that Speer or the Hornady bullets when I looked.  Looking back now on the Hornady website I see that they show "HP/XTP" and "FP/XTP".  I guess that I should wear my glasses.  The 158 Hornady is what I will try next.  Thanks, CW

In a handi i think i would try a 180gr bullet with the longer barrel you are going to increase you speed by a couple of 100 fps.

These are one's that I found just looking real quick at Midway's site.  If you do a search for posts by Jerry Lester on here, he really likes the 158gr. Rem SP bullets behind a dose of Lil' gun out of a lever action Marlin.  If you don't like what you see out of these, there are always cast bullets that work just as well also.  If if were me, I would use the 170gr. GDSP from speer.  There are also the 180gr. bullets from Rem., Hornady, and Nosler if you don't mind hollow points.  I can't help you out on them though, as I don't have a max., but......the time is coming.

These are all 158gr.
