Stock Refinishing Question
« on: July 30, 2007, 04:35:27 PM »
I have a Savage 93R17 FSS. It is a stainless 17 HMR with a sporter barrel and a synthetic stock. I like the rifle except for the stock. I was looking on the Savage site and noticed a 93G 22 magnum with a wood Monte Carlo stock. I called Savage today and ordered a stock from the 93G and all the necessary hardware to fit it to my 93R FSS.($110 including shipping) The lady at Savage was very nice and helpful. I want to strip the factory finish off of this stock and refinish it with Tru Oil. I have refinished a Marlin 336 a while back and it turned out beautiful. The fore end and stock on the Marlin were smooth with no checkering, so it was pretty easy to refinish the wood. The new stock has checkering. I have 3 questions:

1. What is a good stripper to use to get rid of the factory finish?

2. What is the best way to remove the factory finish from the checkering without boogering it up?

3. What is the best way to apply the Tru Oil to the checkering without "filling it in" ? I suspect that I will have to thin the Tru Oil out with mineral spirits to keep this from happening?

Thanks. Any help would be appreciated!
