Barrell add ons
« on: July 15, 2007, 01:28:01 AM »
If you already have a .308 would you add a 30-06 barrell.? I am considering this a 280 or a 243. Hard choice money is tight. I already have the dies for the 06, I like the ballistics of the 280 and the longer barrell, and the 243 for the grand kids to shoot.

Maybe its just time for a new rifle, I have a .223 ultra, .308 ultra RMEF youth, and a .58 huntsman.

The .308 strings the third shot I think barrel heating as I can fire 2 wait 5-10 minutes and fire 2 and they will nearly touch. A third shot in either will be 4" high of the group. ::)

Depends on what your after i think the 308 will do just about what the 06 will if hand loaded i like the 243 but i have moved to the 7mm08 it's a better load and the recoil is not much different.

Get one for you...get a 45-70 or 30-30 or 25-06  ;) ...The 308's are ok...and the o6's are super...but...you will have a blast with the 45-70 (literally).....and the 30-30 & 25-06  are just hard to beat as well...The 25-06 is a awesome round in it's own right and is often over looked...and it is always a good candidate for a re-bore when money is available... Not much you can't do with them..

To answer your initial question.  Yes.  If I wanted a particular caliber, and finances were not an issue, I wouldn't let the fact that I had a similar one prevent me from buying it.

There is little difference in the .280, .30-06 & .308.  With the bullet weights that are available for each you should be able to find a load sufficient for both you and the grandchildren.  Given that you already have a .308, it would be cheaper to buy the .308 dies and work with that caliber.  I'm not sure they exist, but you may look for some managed recoil loads for the .308.

The .243 is a great cartridge and can offer lower recoil for the grandchildren.  You mention the .280, .30-06 and .308.  Does the .243 meet your needs in a big game caliber?

If you are all set to buy a new rifle, there are a lot of options with the calibers you mention.  I would go with what would be the most cost effective and serve your needs.

Unless that's a Talo model for $450, you can get one from RR for considerably less than that including shipping and FFL!!

Ron & Jo...are good people...I have dealt with them quite a bit in the past...but...$450 is a bit much like Quick said...The Ultra Slug Hunter is 1 awesome slug gun...probably a bit heavier than what your used to...but..extremely accurate...I used 1 for several years when I liked across the river..and would be what I carried into the deer woods with if still there...Where are you hunting at over there? I hunted outside of Mt.Vernon and down in Trail of Tears in the Shawnee Nat, Forest...also over by Little Grassy Lake south of Carbondale...Just a reminder...you can purchase long guns on this side of the river(not pistols)...and on long guns... Mo. usually has cheaper prices...If you want...PM me...and I'll give you directions to where I do business at over here...

Thanks for the heads up on the price Quickdtoo. I will bargain what should I shoot for...pun intended.
Mac11700 I hunt down in the pine hills campground area every year in sept for squirrels. Deer hunting is done 4 miles from my front door at dads house with a bow. I just paper punch with the rifles and develop loads for future guided hunts in Elk country. I have a .223 I would love to take on a dog town run sometime too. I just have to wait a couple more years to get the other time off built up to be able to go. I have a goal and a time limit of 5 years for the elk hunt. A goal without a deadline is just a dream. sept 2012.

Get the 30/06. 42Grs of H4895 will give you a duplication load of a 30/30 with a 150 Gr. bullet. Most kids can handle that and it would make a great training load. Then as they grow you can up the ante.

Hodgdon's recommended reduced load is 60% of the max of 51gr H4895, which would be 30.6gr H4895 for the 150gr NBT.

Quote
For all cartridges we chose H4895 because it is the slowest burning propellant that ignites uniformly at reduced charges. For years, H4895 has been the top choice by cast bullet shooters. For this type shooting, loads are reduced even more than the hunting loads listed herein. To create loads of this type for target and plinking, we recommend our 60% rule with H4895. By taking the maximum charges listed in our Annual Manual with any given cartridge and multiplying it by 60%, the shooter can create a 1500 to 2100 fps load, depending on the bullet weight shown. This works only where H4895 is listed. Do not use H4895 in a cartridge where it has not been shown.

Call Hodgdon Powder Company if additional information is needed. Loads may be adjusted up or down to achieve best accuracy. Do not reduce by more than an additional 10%.

Quick, don't overlook this part of their statement.

"Loads may be adjusted up or down to achieve best accuracy."  I copied it from your paste.  I have used this on my 223/Hornet loads.  There is no guidance on how much, but I was given the impression FROM HODGDONS, you could go all the up, from there, to the max loads listed.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

I'm well aware of that, it's why I quoted it and linked to the source, but Daniel or anyone else looking at Hodgdon's data online or in the Annual, will see that the load MSMule posted is well below the recommended start load of 46gr, which by normal handloading procedures is red flag, so I posted the source for his load advice for everyone that will see it and that it is a published load. ;)

Thanks for the reduced load data, I have read that in the youth section but my memory is not as good as it could be. Besides maybe others haven't.

The 42 gr H4895 load is published in the Speer #13 manual.
