308 Ultra Range report

 ; I almost sold his rifle but put a Choate Varmint stock on instead. I shot it on Saturday and got a pleasant surprise. Winds were blowing 25 mph head on. I shot off my bench rest and in total I shot 24 shots. 6 to sight in and after that the 3 shot groups ran between 1-11/2 inches. In the conditions it's about as good as I can shoot. Took 1 shot at a 225 gong dead center hit. I think I have a shooter on my hands. The ammo was Federal Blue box 150gr Sp.  Jess

That Federal Blue Box is shooting well out of my new .308 Handi as well.   I also love it in my sons 30/30.

Really!  I found this out when I bought my son his Marlin 30/30 last year.  after sighting in it would shoot 1" groups from a rest @ 100yds all day long.  This ammo produces bang-flops on deer really well.  I guess old lead bullets still work the deer just haven't evolved beyond them yet.  Looking forward to see what my .308 does with this ammo.  I bet it will be bang flop as well.

  Up date I went out Saturday with a calm wind and finally settled down on the bench for some 100 and 200 yard work. Same great results, at 100 1-1/12 inch goups. best of the day was the first 3 which had a nice clover leaf at 1/2". My shooting went downhill but stll very good. At 200 4 3 shot groups that ran 2-23/4 inches all with 150sp Power Shok's. I fired 2 3 shot groups with the 180's and they ran between 1 1/2-2 inches at a 100 yards. Still minute of Elk so with any luck my cow tag will put so meat in the frezzer. Jess

I have that same stock on two of my rifles and have had no difficulties in getting the accuracy you describe also. Even though my 35 Whelen has some reloading quirks it still shoots MOA @ 100 yds. As you say that is certainly minute of elk. I hope we both fill our cow tags. Good luck and good huntin -  F50

So, you think the Choate stock was responsible for increased accuracy?  Which means the Choate forearm is better.  How is this forearm different than the Handi synthetic or wood?

How much improvement did you get?

The forend seems to "BED" the action. It appears to support the barrel better plus it is a very stable platform to shoot. It makes the recoil go straight back and not up into your face. I would say the Choate shrank the groups by 1/2 inch and very consistent. I will replace my other Handi's with the same stock. Jess
