You probally could, why would you want to? It may well be more than a simple re-barrel job. The 257 has quite a bit larger rim and you might need to have the bolt face opened to accomodate it. After doing that I don't know if you could use the action again for a non-magnum  cartridge of some kind. If you are a handloader, I'd suggest a 25-06Ackley Imp. I have read other reports here that are claiming equal and better velocity with it when compared to the Weatherby.

Don, I own the 257 WBY Mag. And I'm quite sure that the 26-06 Ackley Imp. doesn't have more FPS than my
257 WBY Mag. I'm very impressed with the 257 WBY Mag velocity. I'll give you my reloads FPS: 87gr bullet goes
3779 FPS, 100gr bullet goes 3530 FPS, 117gr bullet goes 3323 fps and the 120gr SP bullet goes 3365 FPS.

The Weatherby loads go more FPS.

The dimensions of these two Weatherby calibers are identical except for the shoulder and the caliber.  It should be a simple rebarrel operation.  I'd call Weatherby in California and ask them to recommend a local authorized gunsmith to do the work for you.  I recently had my Mark V 270 Weatherby rebarreled.  I stayed with the .270 Weatherby as I like it.   I can't imagine why you'd want to downsize, but  it won't be hard to convert it if that's what you want

i want to downsize from a 270winchester to a 257 wby mag because i have three 270's two win one wsm and i thought it would be a lot cheaper to the rebarrel rifle than  buy another rifle i am a lefty  i couldent find a left handed rifle from any company other than weatherby and that at $1899  :o is more than i can afford or would want to spend when a vanguard is like a quarter that price but i did not see a left hand version.     superdown

superdown,
I took a Ruger Mark 1 tang safety and had MGM rebarrel (excellent job by the way). It was a 7 mm Rem Mag to start so the bolt face was the same and case size was correct for the 257wby. As far as the 270 win I think the bolt face will have to be opened up and I'm not sure about the mag. how it will handle the different case size.
the 25-06 AI will work but you have to fire form and I just didn't feel like going thru all the extra work. If your interested in more first hand info about the 25-06AI a friend of mine on a diffrent fourm is a nut about this cartridge and I can get you in touch with him if you would like. Just PM me and I'll hook you up

You're looking at more than just the cost of re barreling. You also have to make sure the larger cartridge feeds through the magazine successfully, plus the bolt face needs modifying. By the time you're done, you'd have most of the money into it to buy another rifle.

Too bad you need a lefty. A new Vanguard is around $500, and they come in 257 wby.

Switching your gun to 25-06 would be a slam dunk, just screw on the bbl and head space it. I doubt a deer is gonna know the difference between getting shot with one, vs the other. Both are gonna hurt! You just might need a little more hold over on the -06.

Didn't the Vanguard come in lefty a few years ago? Maybe you could find a used one?
