Found howie1968
« on: May 28, 2003, 03:20:36 AM »
You boys have probably figured out that howie and the rdnck got together.  Here's the game plan.  I am leaving for the Quigley shoot in Forsyth, Mt. next week, and will be out of pocket for a bit.  When I get back, howie has agreed to put me in the middle of some hogs, and we're gonna try to find a good one.

I hunt with Sharps rifles and black powder, so I will be using traditional paper patched bullets and a case full of 2f.  I will likely use a 45-90, but a 50-90 and a 50-70 are options.  I told howie that I believe I can shoot through the biggest hog in the woods from end to end with the Big 50 and a 625 grain bullet.  We'll keep you boys posted on how this turns out.  Shoot straight, rdnck.

45-70 on hogs
howie--The 45-70 is the Real Deal on things that bite.  I would not shoot the factory 300 grain HP at hogs.  It is poison on deer, but doesn't penetrate like the 405 grain factory stuff.  I used to shoot a lot of jacketed bullets, and found that they would come apart and fragment when you hit something hard.  Good cast bullets give much better weight retention, and will usually mushroom to nearly twice the caliber.  The bullets I have recovered have been shot into a clay bank.  I have never recovered a 405 grain or heavier bullet from a hog or deer.  They always exit, regardless of the angle.   I have never shot the 350 grain stuff, so I can't pass judgment on that.

If you are getting a Marlin and want to reload, a 400 grain Speer over 50 grains of 3031 will give about 1850 fps, and will nearly cut down a 6 inch diameter bull pine with one shot.  It kicks in that rifle too, but is an accurate load.

I will be shooting a 30-1 lead/tin bullet at 1225 to 1250 fps whether I shoot a 45 or a 50.  The 45 will weigh 530 grains, and the 50 will weigh 624.  After you see the ammo, you tell me which one you want me to shoot.  Shoot straight, rdnck.

howie--The factory 405 will get the job done.  Just be sure and leave a good one for me.  That 300 pounder you saw sounds like a hog I would like to see over my sights.  Shoot straight, rdnck.

It  seems  as  if  every  decent  hog  i  have  killed  there   another  one  moves  right  n  in  i  cheked  his  tracks  and  it  is  not  the  big  one roaming  close   but  not  the  one   i  checked  garretts  web  sight  out  and  seen  those  420 gr  hammerheads  at  1850 fps pretty impressive  but they  are  50.00 per  box   i  figured  id order  2  boxes   then  shoot  the  cheap  remington  stuff  The  recoil  shouldnt  be  as  bad  as  my  ruger#1 375H&H  with  300 g bullets   but  then  maybe  i  have  never  felt  the  recoil  of  a  420 gr  bullet  at 1850   garrett  is saying  that  the  taylor  knockout  rating  is  the  same  as  the  375H&H

howie--For cryin' out loud, don't spend fifty bucks a box for 2 boxes of ammo!  Put that hundred bucks toward a Marlin, or better yet, a Sharps.  I'll bring you some 420 grain cast bullet loads at 1850 if you want them.  I can load them for around 12 cents a shot.  I have a Lyman 457193 mold that throws a 420 grain flat nosed bullet.  Loaded with 70 grains of Goex 3f it chronographs 1353 and gives a super sd of 4.  I'll load up a batch of these to bring you, as well as some with 47 grains of 3031.  The 3031 will give about 1750.  This is very easy for me to do, so save that hundred bucks and just get a couple of boxes of the cheap 405 Remington factory loads to get started with.  I guarantee that any hog you hit with the Remington factory ammo will bite the dust in a hurry.  Shoot straight, rdnck.

Whewwww..... I'm finally back.  Our daughter got married back on the 24th.  They live in Albuquerque, NM so have been out there and places along the way.  We took a little vacation since we had to drive that far anyway.

Hey Howie,  I have a Lee mold for the 405 gr FN .457 bullet.  I also have sizer dies for the 450 Lyman sizer.  If you need some bullets for that 45-70 just let me know.  Sorry, but I don't have the reloading dies or any brass to speak of.

Ironwood--The Woodlawn I live in is just north of Marshall on Hwy. 59 and south of Jefferson.  It is small enough it is not on some maps.  I am good to go as soon as I get back from the Quigley shoot.  Shoot straight, rdnck.

Sounds great!

Howie, I think my wife and I are going down to Magnolia Ridge on the 10th.  Maybe we can meet down there some place or in Woodville for a cup of coffee.  I'll try to give you a call tonight.
