Describe Your Favorite Buzz Bait
« on: May 24, 2003, 11:44:01 AM »
Do you prefer bi wing, tri wing or more wing?  Shiny metal blades or colored?  Floating or non floating?  1/8, 1/4, 3/8 oz. or bigger?  Favorite color pattern?  Do you like a "clacker" on it or not?  Me I prefer 1/8 oz early in the year but even later I don't go over 1/4 oz. as they just seem to work better.  Bi wing as tri wings won't work for me either.  At least they never have yet.  Maybe it's just me.  No "clackers" or floating buzz baits either for the same reason.  Color I prefer chartreuse and white or chartreuse, white and blue.  Yeah, Skipper I'm getting personal again.  Lawdog

Lawdog,
I fish very basic buzzers. I use two colors, all black or all white. I carry them in various sizes with single blades. I use the double arm buzzers when I want to make a very slow presentation. In the same colors of course. If the buzzers seem to spook fish back in the weeds I'll go to a weedless topwater that I can let set and twitch for a long period of time. One or the other usually works from May to November for me.
Good Fishing,

Maybe its where I'm fishing but I never caught anything on buzzbaits here and have every design of buzzbait and along with jitterbugs too which never worked for me yet too.  Maybe its just where i'm fishing?? Spinnerbaits never worked till I figured it out I was told to try 1/8oz white skirt with single gold colorado blade and it worked after I changed the skirt and added a trailer but what could I do to a buzzbait to make it work?? I have single twin blades, triple blades, even quad blades in all colors too and just come up skunked with them. I even tried them in the dark late at night and early mornings before first light with no results too. Now they just sit at home with my other 100 spinnerbaits that never caught anything too.  But I have faith I do carry a few anyway and still try everything when its slow just to see??              BigBill

I have small spinnerbaits, crankbaits, some topwater, inline spinners and some plastics have worked so far maybe I just have to try harder and more often??

I have one that has a triple wing inside if a  counter-rotating double blade, in a silver color. Works VERY well. Don't remember who makes it, but a buddy of  mine ordered 4 from Bass pro shops and gave one to me. Other than that I usually use a Lunker Lure. I tried some of those things that Mann's put out that had floating blades, but didn't like them at all.Nor do I like the ones with the clackers. I will use a triple blade when I can get one, because they can be worked slowly and still make a fuss.

Bigbill,
Bass anywhere will eat a buzzbait. Not every day all day, but they can be caught consistantly on buzzbaits. One of the keys to fishing buzzbaits is to make multiple casts to the same target. Sometimes you have to annoy the devil out of them to make them strike. Another good rule of thumb is to fish smaller baits faster in clear water and larger, noiser, slower baits in stained or muddy water. You can experment with retrieves as well. Stop reeling and drop your rod tip every now and then to kill the lure. Let it flutter down just out of sight then lift your rod tip and start reeling agin to bring it back to the surface. Just keep at it untill you find something they like. When you hit that combination-----wow-----too much fun!!!

Thank's Ill stay trying like I did with spinnerbaits.  I bought the buzzbaits from Hart tackle too the quad ones they look awesome in the water and make one hell of a ruckus topwater too.  And yes i have clackers too all sizes and colors too even the little plastic ones too.  I try using the buzzbaits in the dark at about 4:30am till dawn and keep on switching baits till I get action. I even have one rod setup with night spinnerbaits(large black ones) and throw that inbetween too in the channel. The "Skipper" here told me about FLUKES and at the same time i seen the pro's using them too so I figured Skipper is right too so I ordered Super and Regular Flukes and have been practicing with them too since its so slow here and no fish on the fish finder yet(I'm shore fishing) But i want to learn every bait I can while its slow so when things pickup I'm ready to go.  One of my favorite spots is a low bridge which I fish off of with a channel underneath about 6' deep and 14' wide so i have "4" points on the corners of the bridge and "4" weed edges on the sides of the channel 2 on each side of the bridge I have it all closeby channels, points, dropoffs, weed edges and weeds to fish in.  Knowing how to fish it is the key too.  I even caught bass jigging off the bridge too I found a hole that I just drop in a jointed rapala countdown and catch bass once in a while there 3 to 4 lbs.  I have my best luck in past years going from weeds across the rocky points into the channels(10lb bass). I try to stay as parallel to shore as much as possible too. I throw the buzzbaits into the thick cover and bring it a slow retrieve out to the bridge but now like you said I try a pause long enough to let it sink.  I also have good luck with crankbaits along side the weedlines too.  My only question is do you put any type of trailer on the buzzbaits?? Pork or plastic?? or no trailer?           BigBill

You got me all fired up to go buzzing now!!!!! My health isn't that good now but since i'm retired at 52 I go out everyday for an hour or two when I feel a little better till the pain starts then i go back home to bed rest but i look forward to just getting out and wetting my line. I was so wound up from fishing lastweek when I got home I went to bassproshops and cabelas and they had sales on tackle Clearance I spent $200 in minutes bags of worms 50 for $5 deals like that you can't pass up most things are just so expensive its really the only way for me to buy when its cheap on clearance.  I'm just trying to use more plastics I see one guy where I fish he "speedworms" and covers large areas fast and catches bass too. So all this stuff does work we just have to keep on trying different colors and sizes too. I think thats the most fun is the challenge of what the pattern and presentation is today and it could change at any given moment and then it starts for me all over again searching for the next pattern.  One early evening I was using Joes Flies(spinfly) in his new 1/4oz bass size in blackgnat thats silver blade with black fly and so many times it has happened to me as it gets darker(dusk) the fish turn off so this one night I switched to his firetiger apache 1/4oz size(brighter) when the fish turned off and continued to catch bass all over again so color was the key. So every trip is a learning experience too.  And so many baits to learn and master!!!!!!!!  I'm still having fun!!!! And i most likely have more baits than I'll ever use but my kids will have all the baits they will ever need for the rest of their lives too.

I too use the Lunker Lure brand.  Have been using that one for years, and it works.   There is a trick to buzz baits, and its hard to describe, but they have to squeak right.  No squeak = no working buzz bait.  Wrong squeak = no working buzz bait.  I've got one frame that's been through 6 or 7 skirts, but it squeaks just right and catches fish.  Sometimes I do bend them a little to make the blade smack the body.  That's an art too.  Getting the smack right.

Skipper hit something there that I have taken for granted. When going to or from a fishing site, I always make sure my buzzbait is "in the wind", so that the blade is constantly turning and wallowing out the holes in the blade. He's right, they gotta have a certain squeak.

BamaBoy,
Tie a new buzzbait to the truck antenna and monitor the squeal untill you get a sound you like.

You can score the blade with a knife just a little to add a hint of squeak to it.  I hadn't thought about running down the road with them in the wind, but it sounds like a good idea.  Some people also turn the bushing upside down to get a different sounding squeak.
