Got a new Super Redhawk 44 MAG.
« on: July 21, 2007, 05:50:12 AM »
I got a new 44 Mag. Super Redhawk 7 1/2" barrel. This is my first handgun & I'm really excited!!!! I reload for my rifles & now I got to get some dies for this. I think I'm gonna get Lee dies. All my rifle dies are RCBS but I have heard alot of good things about the Lee handgun dies. I'm kinda biased toward Hornaday bullits, need to get some good whitetail hunting loads & was thinking maybe 240 gr. cast semi wad cutters for plinking. Just picked it up yesterday. They didn't have any target ammo in 44 mag. so all I got was some 44 specials PMC & 10 rounds of CCI shotshell (there are some rattle snakes where we target shoot). Does anyone have some good suggestions for loads?
The only thing that made me want the 454 casull was the target grey finish. I can live with the stainless brushed, it's a good looking handgun too. At least the 44 won't break my wrists!!!

Get the RCBS Carbide dies... you'll like them a whole lot more. Don't ask how I know.

Mr Goodwrench,
I've never been a handgun person either but three weeks ago I bought the same revolver you have mounted with a BSA 2X scope.I really like this gun!I shot some .44 Special also but after you shoot a few magnum shells and get used to the mild recoil you will not want to shoot the "wimp" loads anymore. Also point of impact is different so shoot it and zero it with what you plan to use hunting.
Firm, firm two handed grip and slightly flexed elbows will give you the best consistent accuracy.
You did better that you know. The Super Redhawk is the pinnacle of .44 Magnum revolver design and development.
Do a LOT of dry firing to accustom yourself to the trigger and sight picture. It will not hurt it one bit.
This year I will try deer hunting with it in certain places where the shot will be a comfortable distance suited to a revolver.
Midway shooter's supply has Uncle Mike's bandolier style holsters.A great way to carry a large revolver.

I plan on using mine with open sights. Where I'll be hunting with it, it will be best. I shot my friend's 44 Super Redhawk, he loaned it to me on Memorial day weekend & told me buy a box of shells & see if that's what I wanted to get. I shot a whole box of 50 PMC 44 mag. 240 gr. & was sad when I ran out. It was alot of fun. I ordered the same gun in a 454 casull & they messed up the order. I had them cancel it & opted for the 44 mag. that was in stock & cheaper. Also really wasn't sure if I'd like 54% more recoil. I do like the target grey finish though. I wish they had it in the 44 mag. & then I wouldn't of had a problem making up my mind. Don't get me wrong, the brushed stainless looks good.

I recently bought a used Ruger Super BH .44 mag and I am not all that knowledgeable about Ruger, and I have a question.   The front sight ramp has a red insert for sighting purposes.  Is this a custom feature?  I have viewed Ruger Blackhawks all over the net and am yet to see one with the insert.

It's a BH (Blackhawk) with the front sight insert?  Not factory unless it's the Hunter model.  Different colored ones are available if it is. Only the Hunter models in the Bh line have this style front sight.
