Marlin Model 60 accuracy
« on: April 15, 2007, 03:11:33 PM »
Now that the weather is finally breaking here in Michigan (and that can be debated),
I hope to get to the range soon with the Model 60 that I purchased a couple months back.

What's a reasonable amount of accuracy to expect with a 4x scope at 50 yds:

Within a 1" circle
Within a 2" circle
Within a 3" circle

I realize that all firearms prefer different ammo.
Just looking for a starting point as to what your Model 60's seem to like the best.

Thanks

After testing several brands to find the ammo your rifle likes it should keep 'em in a 1" circle @ 50 yards.  3/4" is doable with a good model 60. Mine do with Winchester Dynapoint ammo. Of course they like expensive Wolf Match the best but I'm not going to buy that just to shoot at tin cans and the occasional silhouette match. What doesn't work in a M60 is any ammo with blunt point bullets like Winchester XPert.  They hang up and will drive you nuts. A good Marlin 60 is accurate enough to wow family and friends when shooting tin cans up to 100 yards. I try for 2# coffee cans at that distance, lol. A M60 can certainly win a metallic silhouette hunter class match if you do your part.  I won a bunch with my favorite M60.

I just purchased a used Glenfield 60 because of what I have read on their accuracy. I have not shot it with the scope I mounted yet but I will say at about 15 yards I was shooting at a one inch tag alder and shooting into the same spot using the open sights while function testing it. I was impressed. With good ammo and a decent scope on my gun I figure it to be a tack driver if I do my part and with ammo the gun likes.  I agree with Wolf ammo I have not shot a 22 yet that did not like it though I suppose some day I may run accross one that does not. My problem is finding it the local gun shop has a hard time carrying it.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Most model 60's are very good shooters, my wife's model 60 shoots excellent with a scope ;D

From my not inconsiderable experience with .22 autos...I personally believe that you could get a group of all the .22 autos that are available for $200 or less and the Marlin will probably outshoot them all..with probably the Savage giving it the toughest competition..
The Marlin would beat most of the above $200 semi-autos also..

I have a Model 60 that I've owned for about 10 years, but not fired much, so it's like new.  I mounted a 4X x 32mm scope to it and took it to the range a week ago to sight in the scope.  I consistently shot 1" groups at 50 yd using Remington "Target" standard velocity LR.

i have had my new marlin 60sb at the range and fired over 200 rounds thru it and sighted it in at 25 yds, this gun is a tack driver for an automatic, picked up a new marlin 981T   at one of my favorite gun shops on the way to the range, and just now getting it scoped, if it shoots as good as the 60sb i will be very, very happy

We had my daughter's SB stainless with a 4x Bushnell Sportview out yesterday.  Happened to pick mini-mag hp's out of the ammo box, and it was consistently at or under an inch at 50 yards in the wind.

This not to knock 10/22's I have had 5 0f them over the years and my used 60 that I just bought is more accurate than any of the 5 stock ones. The only one more accurate was my 10/22 T which I should have kept but I needed more tradeing stock when I got my Encore 308 Pistol.

The 795 should be just as accurate as the #60...same action, barrel & mfgr. Rest depends on how well you can hold it since the 795 is a tad lighter than the 60..

the clip model is preferable for a truck gun-potting grouse seen while driving on logging roads. From what I have been able to learn, the marlin has excellent accuracy, just whats needed for making head shots on grouse -most shots seem to be around 25 to 30 yards.I might even get a red dot and try that, instead of a scope.Anybody else use this set up?

Scopes are more accurate than red dots unless you could afford a 1 MOA one. The average ones are 3 and 4 MOA or larger and therefore make a larger group than a scope.

Where do you live where thats legal? Must be out west somewhere as I know WI its illegal and I would suspect other states in the midwest/east as well.

where what is legal?-having a loaded weapon in a vehicle or shooting from a vehicle is  illegal, but shooting grouse spotted on a logging road or forest service road is legal once you are out of the vehicle-hense the desirabilty of a clip rather than a tube magazine, since neither can be in the rifle while driving.

Not in WI it is considered a game bird and shotgun only though you can use archery equipment legally but no rifles or pistols allowed. I would guess other states would have simular regs.

To say nothing about only shooting them in their specific season.

Shooting grouse[within  season] with a rifle is perfectly legal in British Columbia ,the only game bird that applies to.Mostly what happens is you are driving to or from camp to a hunting area, and spot a grouse on the side of the logging road.Or-during mid day, taking a walk with a .22

Well I am not going to look up all the states but I would bet most of them un the lower 50 do not allow shooting game birds with rifles. I know several allow turkey hunting I have no idea about the rest of them for grouse. I am thinking most states it would be illegal.

Now I am not condemning the practice if its legal where you live thats fine though I would bet some grouse purist would not be impressed. Heck some folks look down on ground swatting when you have a shotgun.  My self I like grouse to much to worry about wether I bagged it on the fly or on the ground they taste the same either way.  ;D

  That's why I don't hunt birds..geese, turkey,ducks, pheasant or partridges...

All require a shotgun in NY State to be legal...and I don't like shotgunning that much

I really prefer the precision of the rifle...

Just once I would like to see a grouse in the open.  Seems when I see them it is pounding through brush and tangles so thick I can hardly get the gun up and rarely get it on target in time to take a shot.  Such fun!!

That depends on the state. In New Mexico you can legally carry a loaded rifle, pistol or shot gun in your vehicle. Game birds can only be legally taken when in season and onlly with shotguns. Bows may be legal but I don't know.  Shooting from a road at any game is very illegal.

in British Columbia,it is legal to take grouse ,ptarmigan and turkey with a rimfire rifle, and grouse and ptarmigan  with a centerfire rifle[but not turkey]
Most rimfire taken grouse are taken as incidental harvest on logging roads by big game hunters traveling to and from hunting areas, or for ''camp'' meat, generally out for a walk mid day with a 22.
"Purist''grouse hunters hunt with dogs and shotguns, but as someone said-grouse breasts taste just as good shot with a 22-maybe better-because you aren't picking shot out.
We cannot even carry a handgun in the bush, much less hunt with one-unfortionate because I would like to pack a 22 handgun just for potting grouse while hunting deer or moose

A few years ago we were hunting prairie dogs in South Dakota, and asked a warden if we could legally rest the guns on the car to take a shot with the cars on the road (illegal in Wisconsin).  He said it was legal but didn't see why we would want to get out of the car to shoot.  Every where is different.

yes, laws certainly vary jurisdiction to jurisdiction, and you have to know them. Here ,you can legally shoot right  on logging roads or forest service roads-but not on highways-and in some cases, not within a 400 yard corridor either side of the highway.

22's are legal for grouse here in Oregon.  I saw three on a forest road tonight.  The season starts in a couple of weeks!   ;D
