25 acp conversion versus the vari-flame primer adapter
« on: July 26, 2007, 02:48:58 AM »
Are there any major advantages of buying the 25acp conversion versus the vari-flame adapter?  It seems that both of them would reduce fouling due to the lesser volume of primer flame.  The only real advantage that I can see, is the 25 acp cases would be easier to handle.  But, the vari-flame kit seems much simpler.  Give me some feedback.  Thanks, Greg

I think either one is very simple to reload new primers in, I use the 25ACP in my Encores.  They are indeed a lot easier to handle, they are cheaper to replace the 25ACP brass than the  vari-flame primer adapter. I think the 25ACP brass seals the breach area better then the  vari-flame primer adapter. That has been my experance.

I think you will definitely reduce fouling with small rifle or pistol primers, though the Winchester 777 primers might be an even cheaper way to go to achieve the same results, I just haven't tried them yet. I have the Vari-flame, and it works as claimed. I imagine that eventually I will switch to the .25 ACP cases when I decide to bite the bullet and buy a different breech plug for my Encore. They would surely be easier to handle.

Something to consider. My Omega ( a Z5) occasionally goes nuts on me.Lots of blow back  larger groups and inconsistent velocities.Had a suspicion that the aperture in the breech plug had eroded a bit as I've seen the same effect in side hammers when the nipples erode.Called T/C to see if they have a recommendation as to when to change plugs. Customer service said " The plugs should last as long as the rifle". I swapped plugs and accuracy, consistency and minor blowback all returned.I use VariFlames and this cycle repeats at roughly 500 round intervals.Sooner with CCI209's.If I recall, the 25 ACP plugs are about $60 and stock plugs are $20.If the erosion holds the same pattern for both the 25 ACP plugs do become rather expensive.Would love to, but haven't tried them yet because of this and I'm very curious if the better sealing of the 25's negates the eroding of the plug aperture. Just something to think about...
