Lil'Gun is proving out to be a very good 22 Hornet powder with the lighter bullets. I think I would start with 12.5 grains of Lil'Gun, small rifle primer and a 40 or 45 grain bullet (in .223 diameter) short of the lands for starters. Increase the powder charge  in .2 grain increments if results are not satisfactory. If you can reach the lands, then start with 12 grains and increase in .2 grain increments until you get satisfactory results. Some people have gotten good results with pistol primers, but I would not try that until all else failed. In any case do not go over 13 grains. Make sure your barrel is really clean to start with. You may find it shoots better dirty, but you will not know that until you start with a clean barrel. Buying used rifles is not a bad thing, but a lot of people do not clean their rifles like they should. They buy a new rifle and shoot it until they can't hit a side of a barn with it. Then they trade it in because it will not shoot straight. I have seen rifles on the shelve where the inside of the barrel is green due to all of the copper fouling. They wiped out the powder fouling, but failed to get out the copper fouling. One more thing, it takes a lot of shooting to get throat erosion in a 22 Hornet, so I would not worry about that too much. Good luck to you ;D

I thing I forgot. With the 22 Hornet the case capacity is small, so small increments in powder can make a big difference in pressure. No matter which powder you start with be careful about how much you increase the powder charge. Measure them carefully or you will get erratic results and not know why. Even a + or - .1 grain swing can make a large difference from one load to the next. Eliminate that variable from the equation. That is why I said .2 grains, normally I would make .5 grain jumps in other cartridges. Loading books are a valuable source of information, get as many as you can and consult them often.
