Please Recommend A Reliable Digital Scale
« on: August 04, 2007, 09:57:25 AM »
Hi,

First off, I have gone through two Hornady GS-1000 digital scales. The first one would not work at all. As soon as it powered up it would display an error message. I exchanged it for another one. The second scale would not calibrate. The check weights that were supplied with the scale both read exactly 7 grams below their marked weight. When I followed the instructions to calibrate the scale it would come up and give a calibration error. I returned this scale for a refund.

I am just getting into shotshell reloading so, I need a digital scale that can read at least 1000 grains. Will someone please recommend a RELIABLE digital scale that will read up to at least 1000 grains.

Thank You

I bot one of these RCBS 1500 scales about...I dunno, a year ago. It's one of the best reloading gadgets I ever bot. I haven't bot the powder dispenser part yet...but I'm not far from that decision. Very reliable and very fast....oh yeah....and very accurate.

Bought an EG1500 reloading scale from Cabela's a couple of years ago. Still working great. It has a 1500gr capacity, and also weighs in grams/ozs/pwt.

Thanks for the replies,

I just ordered a Salter-Brecknell EG1500 scale from Accurate-Scales.com. This website advertises that they have awesome customer support. I called them and the guy on the phone was pretty nice. I told him what I needed and he recommended the Salter-Brecknell EG1500. I asked him about the reliability of the scale and he said that Salter-Brecknell is a well known company and he wouldn't sale a product that wasn't reliable.  It is assembled in the USA (the Hornady scale was made in China) and it has a 3 year warranty. Their return policy is that they will exchange or refund the scale within 30 days and after that it goes to their warranty department.

It should be in by Friday. I will let you know how it goes. I sure hope it works!

Yep, that's the same scale I have. Accurate and pretty rugged. Mine rode about in my war bag the last year or so I worked. A 9v battery powers it for a long time.

I work in the scale industry and if you can find an Ohaus brand scale in your price range you'll not be disappointed.

Billy,
Had a Ohaus 505 for almost 30 yrs. Gave it to my son when he started reloading. Couldn't find another Ohaus when I replaced it. Ended up with a decent Lyman beam scale. I use both the beam and elecronic from time to time. I reccomend everyone have both types of scales on their bench.

I have an old and I do mean OLD RCBS scale made by PACT. It looks just like the scales they now sell in conjunction with the powder dispenser as a unit. Mine certainly doesn't have the feature to use with that dispenser but physically looks just like it. I don't really recall when I bought it but I'd guess over 12-15 years ago. It was when they first came out however long ago that was. It's still working just fine for me.

I did have to return it once for repair at no cost to me when the display died on it early after getting it. I have had to call a couple times to get instructions to calibrate it when the normal instructions didn't work. I could just write down those instructions when it happens but since it's only occurred twice in all those years I'd just as soon call and let them walk me thru it.

Were I looking for another I'd likely get the RCBS unit that looks like the one I now have and I like the idea of that powder dispenser that works with it so I'd likely go that route. But until this one dies I see no reason to get another.

Ohaus also makes electronic scales I'm not sure if they offer them in grains but the scout pro series is pretty reliable for a low cost scale in the industrial market.

IVe had a pact for about 12 years. Its in for repair right now but no big deal to me as they have an unconditional lifetime warantee. If it were me id look at a pact or a rcbs if for no other reason then they back them forever.

I have the RCBS Chargemaster 1500 with the dispenser. It has made things so simple I don't know how I did without it before. ;D

I too have the Chargemaster.  Have for about two years now.  I packaged up my level scale and manual powder dispenser and have not looked back.  I don't have to weigh out or trickle every charge when I want nice loads.  Now a couple of my buddies that are really jealous.

Alright,

I got the scale in and it works as advertised. I'm happy with it.

One thing though, the guy I talked to said it was assembled in the USA but the box says "Made in China." Oh well, I guess. I prefer to buy American made stuff.
