Traditions Lighting Lightweight?
« on: July 19, 2007, 02:25:04 PM »
i bought one for $100 a while back and it just sat in my gun case and i took it out and put a scope on it and used aluminum Weaver mounts and there was some blow back on the scope and bases and made them lose and it messed up my sight in. i am thinking about trading it and i was wondering if there was any suggestions on what to do about the basses or if its hopeless. i was going to try lock-tight on it but decided not too. I want to know if its best to fix it and use it or to just trade it? thanks Ricky

I seriously doubt that the blow back loosened your scope mounts.  They probably weren't anchored well enough at the start.  If there was just a tiny bit of oil in the screw holes or on the screw threads, they will come loose.  These areas need to be degreased with alcohol or some such.  A spray can of carburetor cleaner or brake cleaner works well.  Put some clear fingernail polish Or loc tight) on the threads, re-tighten them, and give the gun another try.

You can eliminate much of the blow back by adjusting your breech plug.  Screw it in all the way finger tight, then back it out 1/4 turn.  Put a fresh primer in and see if you can close the breech.

If it does NOT close, screw it down a tiny bit and try again.  Keep doing this until it closes tight on the primer.

If it does close, back it out a tiny bit and try again.  Keep doing this until it will not close.  Then screw it down just enough for it to close.

You'll probably still get a little blow back under the scope, but not much.  Put a piece of black electrical tape or duct tape on the bottom half of the scope where the blowback hits it.  Problem solved.

i went and looked at it and where the first mounts are the gases are going through the screw holes. they go all the way through to the rifling and that's where the gasses are coming from. i can see where its coming from on the screws and the bases. i am still going to try what you said though. if this doesn't work i am going to trade it on a new bow.

Whoa!!!    Stop!  Stop! Stop!   The screw holes for a sight or scope mounts should NOT go all the way through to the interior of the barrel.  Are those factory drilled holes?  If so, call the company and get a replacement gun or barrel.  If they were put in by a backyard gunsmith, you've got a problem I don't know how to cure.

that's what i was thinking. it is factory. i guess that's why 2 years ago that bass pro had it on clearance. and i checked on the warranty and there isn't one because i bought it on Clearance. i guess you get what you pay for. it works with open sites fine and i can get $10 for it its gone. i won't ever buy another traditions.

Closeout special or not - it's a factory defect.  Can't hurt to call Traditions and describe the problem.  I'll bet they tell you to ship it back to them, and they replace it after inspection.

Frankly I'd trash the gun.  I know it sounds severe but best of luck getting any kind of service from Traditions.  I've owned 2 and it was the only gun I've ever sold.  My Lightning was accurate but if you forgot to set the safety and closed the bolt the gun fired!!  Talk about scary.  The quality control is bad, bad, bad.

Sorry to hear about your experience.  I've had good luck with T/C customer service if you decide to go with another brand.  My front sling stud pulled out the first day I owned an Omega, they put it back in but it happened again, and I had to ship it out again and they fixed it very well (internal nut) the second time.  I was out some shipping (errrr) but they did throw in about $30 worth of bullets on the 2nd return.

Maybe others can comment on their experience with other companies
