Globe Sights

How do you fellas like using a globe sight.  I am going to put a Lyman 17ahb (.404 height) on my 1895 cowboy with a Williams FP peep sight. ( dont tell my wife, she thinks I spend too much on guns as is) I think it will be just the ticket for my hunting needs in the open cliffy pine forests in the easten washington mountains, where I  might want the added precision of that sight for shots out to 200 yards or so. I have young eyes also so I am not too worried about being able to focus on the smaller bead/post type inserts. Have any of you used this setup on your rifles?

I do have a set of globe sights on a H&R Buffalo Classic, and while they work great at the range, I'm not sure how well they would work in the field on game.  The double ring would seem to cover up too much of your target for optimum aim.  Not a problem with paper, but it would quite different on a deer.  You might have to try different inserts to find the one that works best for your conditions.  My rifle came with several inserts and I haven't really messed with them too much.  I do have one that is simply a yellow lens with a hole in the middle which might work well on game.  Another option would be a cross hair type insert up front.

There are LYMAN #17s on several of my 44 and 45/70 MARLIN COWBOY RIFLES.  Mine also have LYMAN #66 receiver sights.  Great set up for short range and brush!

Two suggestions:  Put the yellow plastic shade in the front sight for woods hunting. ( I like the post insert because I do a lot of pistol shooting.)  And remove the aperture from the receiver sight--Jeff Cooper's ghost ring effect.

Anyone use the MERIT adjustable aperture, as listed in BROWNELLS?  It looks good to me, but I haven't had one to examine before buying.(The similar HADLEY EYE-CUP works well on the tang sight on my SHILOH SHARPS.)

Globe sights are common for Cowboy Lever Action Silhouttes, both 100 & 200 meter; but our animals are stationary. They are great for silhouettes, not sure how well they will work for animals on the move since your field of vision will be less. The answer may be in a larger diameter peep with the manufacturers post. I get hunting accuracy with that set up.
