7x57 Tang Safety Model-Red Pad
« on: August 14, 2007, 01:02:13 PM »
Anyone have one of these? Was wondering.......and this may sound stupid......but the only question left unanswered is the one not asked.........that is 7x57 Mauser right? Surely they didn't chamber one up for the rimmed 7x57.  :-\
Anyway I've been looking at a nice used one for $400 and was wondering if it might be worth a try. Probably get out the door for less......Money talks, etc.

i have one in .25-06, a friend has one in 7x57 mauser (yes it is mauser). both are definite shooters. his will shoot MOA with more than one factory load. mine will shoot sub 1/2 inch all day long with any of my handloads. $400 isnt a bad price, but im sure they'd be willing to let it go for a bit less. if you get it i dont think you will be dissapointed.

to answer your question it is not the rimmed version. at one time i owned two, one the model 77 with the tang safety, the other the mark II. i don't own either now. i now own a cz 550 american in 7x57mm. the rugers are fine rifles and finding one in 7x57mm is quite a find these days. if you can walk out the door with it for $400, you have a bargain. the rugers have a barrel twist of 1x9. i handload exclusively using 160 grain class bullets, primarily the 162 grain hornady sst and the other the 160 grain nosler partition. with my handloads using h414 powder i developed a load that would shoot half inch groups at 100 yards. i have used the 7x57mm to take elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, antelope, wild hogs, bear, coyotes and wild turkey. with the exception of one hog, all were one-shot kills. one of the elk was taken at an honest to goodness 325 yards, a broadside shot on a 5x5 bull. he had a wide rack and thick beams, leading me to believe he was a tad older than i at first suspected. at the shot he backed up a step or two, sat back on his butt and fell over deader than aunt maude's dog. i lasered a cedar tree near him as it was easy to laser. what makes the 7x57mm such a effective game cartridge is it kicks so mild that shooters tend to shoot it a lot. shooters learn the rifle's capabilities and in the process learn their own capabilities. that makes for an affective combination. the best of luck to you and i really do hope you can buy this rifle. tom purdom

There are three Rugers in 7x57mm on GunsAmeric.com right now under 7x57 Mauser. Two are going for $700 and the other is in the $500 range. I'd say you are doing well with the one you can pick up for $400. You will find that the ammunition is somewhat limited in the factory load department, but with handloading you will have a lot from which to select. You might also look at cpcartridge.com for some pricey, but powerful loadings going from 110 grain bullets to 175 grain bullets. The cartridge itself seems to ebb and flow here in the United States. Some years it is hot, some years it is not. All years, however, it is an effective big game cartridge for stuff in the lower 48. If you can afford it, slap a little Leupolf VariX-1 in 4x12x40 on it and you'll be good to go. I like the 12 power magnification to see the bullet holes at 100 yards during range stuff. I hope you can raise the money for this rifle and I hope it is one of the accurate Rugers. The two I had were solid one-inch at 100 yard rifles with the Hornady 139 grain Bullets and the Hornady 154 grain bullets. Good luck to you ... Tom Purdom
