DIY Gun Finish

Greetings to all.  I am back..... heart attacks are not fun.

I have a question about putting a good Durable rust proof finish on a long gun.  I have seen many products but I am looking for first hand feedback.  This Dura finish is new to me?  Camo plastic wraps are also new to me....  How about parkerizing?   I have even seen rattle can painted finishes rust.

The goal is to refinish a hunting rifle with possibly the best rust free (forever I hope) finish possible.

Glad to hear you are still on this side of the dirt. I almost lost my dad to a heart attack 5 years ago because
he tried to "man up" and ignore the pain.
I can't help you with the gun finish other than to say my factory parkerized shotguns have no rust
and they've been thru it all.

A few years back I refinished a rifle with one of the Brownells "bake on" teflon products.  I don't recommend it.  It took me almost two cans to finish the job and it flaked in a couple of spots.  No rust, though.  It ended up costing about $30 to have it bead blasted and $60 for the teflon.  You could probably get it parkerized for a few more dollars.  A decent parkerized finish shouldn't rust if you oil it before you put it away.

On the heart attack note... My dad recently went through a similar episode where he didn't want to make a fuss over himself about some chest pains.  He waited patiently in pain for several hours until my mom got home from work to drive him to the hospital.  I don't think it dawned on him that the fact that he was in too much pain to drive himself might have warranted a ride in an ambulance.  Glad you made it.

Bob, glad to hear you are "back in business".

This is not a DIY finish, but I thought I would mention just in case you are interested.  Quite a few of my buddies from another forum have had their muzzleloaders Blackiced and absolutely love it.  Lee is a great guy and stands behind his work.

My CCW was rusting every day (hot in Texas) so I sanded it to rough it up after I took all the parts out and used *Gun Coat* came out fine. Built three AK's used it in them no problem the secret is clean with carburetor cleaner after rough up.By the way I did bake them in the oven at 275 for three hours. It smells so if your wife doesn't understand do it while shee is away, my wife of 47 years is use to me by now.

While it will not completely prevent rust, and is not as pretty as some blues, Brownell's Oxpho-Blue is very easy to use, cheap, and is more durable than most cold blues. It requires nothing more than cleaning off the old blue, a bit of de-greasing, rubbing on with a cloth, then evening out the finish steel wool.

That's the same stuff I used.  Make sure you factor in two cans when you price it.
