Scope Help
« on: August 01, 2007, 09:45:03 AM »
I would to know ya'll's thoughts  on a scope for my handi in 500 S&W. I was thing a low power variable like 2-7 x 32 or 40. I don't want to spend a lot of money on the scope, but don't want it to fall apart due to recoil. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Fixed power is usually less sensitive to recoil.
I have been very impressed with my Bushnell 4x32.
Not that I have anything that kicks like a 500.

Fixed power Weaver K6 would do the job nicely. I have one and it's great.

Ever thought about a red dot scope?  Bushnell makes one they call a Trophy, as is also the name of one of their magnified scopes.  Cost is about 90.00 which isn't much these days for a scope of any kind. I've got one coming to me right now.  I did a bit of research prior to buying this and everything I read was positive.  It's going on a Marlin 336 in .30/30 Winchester.

Thanks for the suggestions so far...

I looked at the mueller, but i could not find one without an ill. reticle.

I will look at the Weaver

I had a red dot on another rifle, I did not like it.. the moa on them is usually between 4 and 10 which is a very large dot at 100yds. They do make them with the four different patterns including the crosshair. I hope you enjoy it. in my opinion they are for backyard plinking and short range point shooting on man size targets out to 50 yrds.
Thanks so far I going to look at the weaver, and a guy a work told me about the bushnell trophy 2-7x32 little concerned about the eye relief.. what do ya'll think would be a good eye relief.

You may want to take a look at some of the shotgun scopes.  They tend to be low to moderate power magnification and have generous eye relief (many of them 4-5.5") which may be a good thing on a 500.  The only down side is they are typically set up to be parallax free at 50 yards so at longer ranges you may run into some parallax issues.

I put the Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32 shotgun scope on my .500S&W recently, it works very well indeed, has plenty of eye relief even with hot loads, I shot the 700gr Ranger Rick bullets at 1430fps in it this week, got the best groups I've shot so far in it with this scope, so that's definately a plus. ;)

You might try a 2 1/2 X20 BSA shotgun scope worked well for me, when I had a Handi in 45-70.    Doug

Tim,
how were those bullets?, I've only shot the 275 magtech. was thinking about trying some that they load, until i get set up for reloading. really don't need them for deer, but would like to see what they would do to a big hog in the groves.

I currently have a 6x 5 star redfield on my 500.  Plenty of eye relief and pin point aiming further than it will lob a big bullet.

Tim what load did you use on the 700 grain bullets?  I have a few of those waiting for a cool day.

Rather than hijack this thread, I posted a follow up on the original 500S&W thread, it has load info.
