  Just how good is the .357 mag for decent sized whitetail deer ?
  
   ..And..Something that Handi owners want to know...are one shot kills common place ?

   BTW...Are the newer .44 mag barrels now being made with the correct bore & twist, so they deliver better accuracy ?

YES.. but its a hi percentage shot with light bullets. I do not subscribe to doing this. i prefer a heaver bullet at higher velocities...BUT

 Any good 125HP loaded to top velocities. You will need to be a HUNTER not a SHOOTER. What I mean is take only full broadside or slightly qtr away shots NO MATTER WHAT. Shoot for the center of the lungs and calm non excited deer with in 50 yards, closer is better. Not that you cannot kill at longer ranges...just penetration will be minimal. Get it right and you will think you poleaxed them!!


I prefer a 170GD loaded to top velocities from a rifle and a good 140gr HP from a 8" barreled pistol. Both loaded to top velocities.

Again, not that lesser loadings will not kill deer. I just feel we owe it to the game we hunt to use enough gun for a quick humane kill.

Snuck that it on us after the fact, didn't ya!!!

They're still 1:38" twist, but those bought this year have slugged at .430" and are shooting good, an improvement over the past. I just bought a frame from Tallyho that's going in for 357mag and 44mag barrels as soon as they get the 357 barrels back in stock, if that means anything to ya!! ;D

i personally do not use a 357, but two friends do, and put meat in the freezer every year. not sure what grain bullet they use,  but i know they do not use hollow points.  one put 3 holes in a deer with one shot, still wonderin' how he did that  ???

The 357 is fine for deer in the mid size range make the right shot use the right bullet and practice,practice,practice and then practice some more. A good bullet loaded right NO problems with whitetails get up with Jerry Lester he's the 357 man!

Two of those links that Quick posted are stories of my Daughter's first deer and one I shot using her rifle. We were both loaded up with 180 grain Cor-Bon cartridges. They did their job. Her deer was 109 yards away. Mine was 40 yards. Her deer ran about 20 yards and died. A complete pass through, breaking ribs, piercing, his heart, and lungs. Mine was dead right there. He might have quivered once. I liked her gun so much I got one for myself and will carry it this season. I'm a believer!

I got my dad hooked on the 357 mag handi last year.  He was shooting 158gr remingtons.  Dropped a doe at about 75 yards  in her tracks.  Just layed down.  I can't wait to try the maxi this year!

Don't discount the effectiveness of the 357 mag on deer. Nosler offers a 180 grain in a Partition. It will kill deer and small hogs within its effective range no problem.

I know the .357 will drop deer well (I have done it many times with a Colt SAA). I suggest you are proficient with it like you would be with a bow. By that I'm sayin'; Reasonable range shots and lots of practice.

   Carp: Surely it must be an extra benefit to have a daughter that is interested in doing your "hunting thing" with you. I started both my sons early and my grandsons the same (girls are rare in my family..LOL)..
..But now I have a Grandaughter of 8 yrs that I started with her own Rossi .22/.410 about 3 years ago...hopefully, if I last long enough..we can share some hunts together..

I'd use one loaded with xtp or cast at 180gr weight, out 100yds.
