M77 COMPACT RIfle

I just  looked at, played with this rifle at the local gun store, 5 1/2 pounds and in 223. I like this for a really  lite weight walking  Prarie dog & Jackrabbit gun. Anyone have one & could you tell me what you like... or dislike about it. THANKS

I have one in 260 rem with wood stock. It shoots well for a short, light barrel, and is a joy to carry. With handloads, I'm getting 5 shots into 1-1/4" at 100 yds.  Took a doe with it last year. Should be good for the purpose you descibe.

I bought one in .243 for m wife a few years back. She doesn't hunt anymore, so my young son may start out with it. It handles very well, is durable, and fits youngsters, women and big guys like me when in a cramped stand or blind.. Shoots pretty well, and the deer don't notice the slight decrease in velocity from the shorter barrel. I'd like one in .308 for myself! All in all, a great little rifle.

My wife and nephews have one in 7mm08.  Both shoot very well with the reloads I developed.  The nephews' rifle will shoot 5 shots in the size of a nickle at 110yrds.  The wifes' will shoot 5 shots in about the size of a quarter.  I did put timney triggers on both guns.  This helped with the groups quite a bit.  The rifles are very nice for a shorty.  Crappy trigger is the only complaint we had until I changed them.

(By the way.  Between the two rifles in just two years of owning them they have taken 4 cow elk and 3 deer.  Hoping to more than double that with the tags we have this year.)
