.224 bullets in .308 caliber sabot question
«

Looking for real life experiences with 30 cal. sabots using .22 cal. bullets. Accuracy, fouling, etc. Thought of trying them in a .308 Winchester and maybe in a 7.62x25mm. The sabots can be found, I was just curious before I bought any. Thanks, T.

Remington offered those for several years in .30-30, .308 and .30-06 (if memory serves). While they had plenty of speed, 3-4 inch groups were the norm with some light sabot fouling.

I wasted some money on them at one point. Accuracy was nonexistent.

I bought some of the sabots at a gun show a number of years ago. The guy that sold them to me said to use your regular powder load and use them with a .22 bullet instead of the regular bullet. They could be used in any 30 caliber cartridge. I loaded them with 50 grains of IMR 4064 (my regular load with a 150 grain bullet for my 30-06) and the sabot with a 55 grain bullet. Recoil was nonexistent, and so was the accuracy. I was doing good to keep them inside of ten inches at 100 yards. They might be made to shoot accurately with a different powder but I didn't spend the time or powder to find out.
Thanks,

I guess I'll stick with my 223! Even with bulk, flat based 55 grain bullets my groups run about 1" at 100 yards for five shots. Thanks for the replies. T

we picked up a few hundred of those sabots years ago. We found that they did NOT always leave the bullet on exiting the muzzle. They MUST fit the base of the bullet and NOT lock into the cannelure. It was more trouble than it was worth to get decent (not target) accuracy with them.
