Help with my 1100

I just bought a used Rem 1100 today and haven't fired it yet because the bolt jams.  When I load the tube magazine, the bolt sticks shut.  I figured out that if I push the shell (in the tube magazine) in, the bolt will then open, but the shell won't load into the chamber.

What could be causing this?  Any ideas?

I will have to look tommorrow but you could pull the bolt back with the gun empty and put one in the chamber ,close the bolt and put 2 in the magazine then see if they cycle.

I hope this helps more, as I believe it is a more accurate description of my problem.

I bought an 1100 yesterday.  Upon loading it for the first time, the shell is stuck in the magazine.  Accordingly, the bolt won't open.  I figured out that if I press the shell back in the magazine a little, the bolt will open, but the shell will not then load into the chamber...so the shell is still stuck in the tube magazine.  Does anyone know what's causing this and/or how I can fix the problem?  What should I do?

update...I got the shell out by pressing a piece of metal down on the inside of the receiver (same side as ejection). When I press this, the bolt opens and the shells drops into position, but the bolt stays open. In order to get it to close, I have to press the button on the feed ramp.

Does this info help anyone diagnose my problem?

Also, the bolt only closes when I press this button...otherwise it always stays open after going back.

When I picked up my Used 1100 I broke it down.  Cleaned everythng, lubed everything, and re assembeld according to the Gunsmith manual I have.  I usually do this with every gun I buy used.  I have a friend that owned a gun shop and saw many guns that were sold because they didn't work due to eing impropperly assembled or a part was broken.

Is the spring in the magazine? The bolt always stays open when operated by hand.

The 1100 bolt always stays open when the magazine is empty and it's empty if you push the shell forward off the shell stop. Work the action slowly and when the bolt locks back press the release on the bottom and hold the bolt handle back a bit to slow its operation. Does the lifter(carrier) move up as the bolt moves forward. With the 1100 empty and the bolt back a shell may be inserted into the chamber and the bottom button pushed to close the bolt. It sounds as if the feed latch is not releasing a round from the magazine. If the carrier moves when released manually then the shell is not being released from the magazine. Bent feed latch(42) or interceptor(59) or the interceptors spring is broke. or gone.. Could many things.. try operating manually and check the operation of the carrier and shell latch. Remember the 1100 bolt stays locked open if no shell is released by the shell latch to fly rearward and release the carrier latch. A link below will take you to a parts daigram which may help some.
