glock glitch?

hello all. i just got my first new glock g17 a couple of weeks ago and have been to the range with it. i only have win and rem factory ammo for it so far. the 115 grain rem loads work perfectly. but when i was using the win whitebox 147 grain tapered flat nose ammo is when i had the "glitch". this gun uses 10 round mags. at the end of one mag the slide locked open as should be normal and i assumed the gun was empty. before i removed the mag i looked into the chamber area and was surprised to note that there was a cartridge midway between the mag and the chamber! the slide was locked open. i didnt know quite what to do with it so decieded to release the slide stop and the cartridge chambered perfectly and i fired it. this happened on the 160th round, or so. i fired two mags after that and had no problem. i'm confused with this happening and a little concerned. it could potentionaly leave the gun in a loaded condition if i hadent removed the mag and closed the slide without checking it. i can't believe this is a normal thing with a glock and has this happened to anyone else??  any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

really guys?? someone has to have an opinion on this. it never happened with my  series 70 1911 or any other auto ive had anything to do with.

Welcome to the site! The hour of your posting may have had sometihing to do with the lack of a prompt reply. I have owned a few Glocks, and currently own three. Among them are a Glk 17. Malfunctions with Glocks are pretty rare. If the problem was mechanical, I suspect the magazine. The fact that it only occurred once in 200rds makes me wonder if your grip somehow caused you to exert upward pressure on the slide lock causing the premature locking of the slide. This sometimes happens under recoil, and the fact that it happened with the bullet profile of the 147gr, and the slightly heavier recoiling round, makes me guess that may be the problem. GSD17 will be along shortly to share his Glock expertise with us, and get you on the right track. Don't despair Glocks are about as reliable as mechanical things get.

hi savage. thanks for the reply. it certainly makes more sence than anything i have come up with. i have examined the gun and mags at length and can find nothing out of sorts. the day i was shooting it  was-20c,  and i'm pretty sure the gun was the same temp. plus the fact it's the first glock i have ever seen. i do tend to think it was operator error. the potential for having a loaded gun without knowing it definatly did and does scare me. it all becomes a matter of the basic  "safety first" and knowing what the gun is doing "all" the time. other than that, i really like this gun, and will probably have it for a long time. merry CHRISTmas and a great new year to you!

my first glock would not work and everyone said i was crazy , the factory rebuilt it and it worked great !
now if  not the gun or mag take a look at your grip , some get in contact with the slide release and stop the gun !
i have no idea where or if you use your left hand for support but if one thumb rides on top the other that might cause the stop . i know why not with all loads , maybe the way the heavier load recoils or the slide moves back !

as for the gun make sure the spring that positions the slide release is installed correctly .

Do the mags have 2183 numbered followers?If they do I would call Glock and have them send you new followers for your mags,they very well may be your problem.I believe 9mm3 followers will fix your problem.

hi guys. i just looked at my followers and they do indeed have 2183-1 on them.  the more i look at the situation the more i believe that it was me and my thumb that caused the stoppage. i shoot right handed with my left thumb on top of my right. and it was really cold that day. it has to be my mistake! my new glock couldn't possibly behave like this!!?? i really like it though. with my pragmatic view of mechanical things, the glock pistol just makes scence to me. i'm starting to think of a model 20 now. maybe a ported one. thanks for all the replies guys.

Using the "Thumbs Forward" grip quite frequently causes the slide lock to engage under recoil. This might be expecially so in cold weather when our hands are numb.

Everyone has pretty much pointed out the most obvious and likely culprits. I suspect the accidental activation of the slide stop lever as well.

Watch your grip, perfect your grip.. and I suspect the problem will cease.
