FL resize new unfired brass?
« on: August 11, 2007, 05:40:03 AM »
I've just got in my order of brass and bullets for a .225 Winchester that I recently acquired.  Just to start off, I got 50 pieces of new Winchester brass (will probably order another 200 in a month or two).  Quick question though - seeing as how this brass is brand new: should I do a FL resize on it or would it have already been sized correctly from the factory?

Any advice is appreciated.  Thanks.

MG, IMHO at the very least, I'd think you'd want to neck-size the cases to ensure enough pull or grip of the case neck on the shank or sides of the bullet, especially if it doesn't have a cannelure to crimp the case mouth into, ( in which case you should taper crimp, but crimp, one way or the other, to help the burn) to prevent the bullet from moving in or out of the case under recoil. If the loaded round will be used in an autoloading rifle, I've heard that full-length sizing is mandatory. If you're using it in a bolt gun & only one gun, you may be able to get by with neck-sizing only & it'll make your cases live longer. Someone with more experience may advise FL sizing new cases, tho. I don't think the factory FL sizes new cases before they go out their door. Good luck, jd45

Drop a couple of them into your chamber to ensure that they will chamber (i've never had a factory case not chamber in a factory chamber) then bump the resizing ball thru the neck to ensure the mouth is round (don't go too far or you'll have to lube the case and if a mouth is badly dinged, just take a phillips screwdriver or a metal dowel and round it out intil it'll fit over the resizing ball). Then chamfer the inside of the mouth and you're ready to prime, load and fire.
After you've fired them the first time, trim to length and all the other neat things folks tells you do do to them.

Every major gun writer I have ever read on the subject tells you to size new brass. Helps insure they are correct and takes some of the handling dents out of the case mouths. Personally I always FLS and trim to min specs before I ever use new brass. I find too much of it that varies in length.   KN

I full size all new brass, one could neck size them as well. I do this because the case mouths are many times deformed.

"  Tell you what, Full length size your new brass and trim it to length. THEN fire it and remeasure it.  You'll find that the length is again all over the place and you have to trim it again.

I do same as beeman,if the mouths are dented which you always find some that are,I just dry lube inside of necks and run them over expander to get them in shape. Then fire them and then trim after they fit my chamber. You can do what you want,as they are yours  :D

I full length size, trim, chamfer, load, shoot, ....then I neck size.....and find it usually will need a bit of trimming again.

Brass prep is not the highlight of my day.  >:(......but neither is draggin a deer up a steep ravine.

However....there are worse things in this life!!!

If the necks aren't badly deformed I just prime and load. I have yet to run into any issues from doing this. The way I look at it the manufacturer has already sized the brass to load their own ammo on.

I am not a fan of full length resizing, but I do it to new brass. It gives you a consistent starting point.

After that I neck size if it is a bottleneck cartridge, partial resize if I don't have the Lee collet die, or full length resize for my semi auto or a pistol cartridge.

just my opinion,

You're kidding right?  Have you measured new reloading brass?  And I do not mean "trim to length".
