Reloading for 8mm Mauser
« on: August 14, 2007, 11:41:07 AM »
What are some of you guys pet loads and for what game?  Bullet size, powder, and what muzzle velocity if you have it.  I am getting into reloading.
Thanks

I have a sporterized K98 Mauser that likes Speer 200 grain spitzers with 44 grains of Varget. CCI 200 primers for a chronographed muzzle velocity of 2265 fps. I get three shot groups right at about 1" woth this load on my scoped sporterized K98.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

My Swedish made Husquavarna 98 in 8mm prefers 200 gn Nosler Accubonds or 195 gn Hornadays over 46.3 gns of VithaVuori Oy N140 for 2500+'/sec and both slugs group to one hole at 100 yds.  Mikey.

Mine LOVE a max load of 4064 and either a 170GR Hornady or a 175GR Sierra bullet.
I have chronoed the 175 @ 2600 from my 21" cut down military barrel.

BOTH shoot right at 1" @ 100yrds form a good rest.

I wanted one bullet for everything in my 8x57jrs, and after some experimenting i settled in 200 NP's...  I've used them for everything from coyote, to moose and bear, and i have nothing but good things to report.

It's a great all around bullet that will expand some on small light skinned animals

But still drive in deep on the bigger ones.

I used the Hornady 170g rn bullets pushed byIMR4064 at 2600 fps, for deer hunting. I also found the Hornady 195g bullet to be very accurate pushed by Win 748 at 2500 fps.

I use Speer 200 grain bullets because they are cheap and available and perform very well on deer, probably would work well on even moose, elk. The rounds are powered by a max charge of RL-15. I am sure the Nosler partitions work very well but are too expensive for me since i shoot my 8mm alot. Lately I have been loading military pulled 200 grain fmj and surplus powder, very cheap.

H-205, NO it's not available anymore, and yes i do have a good supply of it around...  When i find something that works so well for me, i stock up on it so i don't run out of it, for just that reason!

I use 200 NP's for hunting as i take it serious and i may want to take something big or dangerous with this round...  I can always kill paper (read practice) with "anything", and i do keep 200 Speers around for that...

Once i worked up a load with 200 Speers, the cross over to 200 NP's was very easy, and not costly at all...

I have put some "serious" holes in deer with the 200 Speers. :D  But I would use NP's if I was hunting moose ;)
