M77 making a change?
« on: August 08, 2007, 03:52:18 PM »
Got some info this week that the M77 bolt guns were going back to the bolt on receiver for mounting systems. Anyone else heard this?

Where did you hear this at?  It woud be easier to investigate if I knew.

do you mean bolt-on scope mounts?

If so, I really doubt it.  Ruger has a patent for their scope mounting system and it is one of the things that sets them apart.  IMHO it is the strongest mounting system available.  (A mule, two logs and a couple busted ribs helped me decide that.)

Further, the new Hawkeye uses the receiver dovetails.  I doubt they are going to be changing that after just introducing it.

I  heard it at some of the shows and dealer shows this year. Also from a major scope co. rep. in the last few weeks. They said the dealer sales were down because of the mounting system. It might be all talk. Has anyone else heard anything?

I can see the scope manufatures wanting it changed.  With Ruger making the rings and including ta set with each gun, I see the aftermarket mount & ring makers crying over their lost sales.  Too bad for them.  Kudos for Ruger.

If I could design a bolt action rifle...I'd want Ruger's scope mounting system and the old Ruger tang safety...

The stock of a Remington 700 CDL and a Timney trigger system...If bullet manufacturers can use say a Nosler Partition, why can gun makers
use someone else's trigger....If that can't be hammered out, I'd prefer a 700 trigger to the current Ruger MK-II...

The action and barrel in a 700 wouldn't change, I might tighten up manufacturing tolerances...

Ruger did make some "round top" receivers back in the 70's. I have one in 270 Win caliber. They were only made for a short time. The thing I don't care about the Ruger mounts, is there isn't any windage adjustment on the rings.

if the base is correct and the scope is good you shouldn't need it should you ? on a mod. 700 rem and a mod 70 i have both need it because the base holes were off from the factory ! Ruger has a good thing hope they realize it !

Back in the mid 70's, I ran a large gun shop in Boise, Id, and sold a lot of Ruger M77's. We always mounted scopes on them for the customers, and I found many M77 cast in bases off enough that you had to screw the wind-age all the way on a scope, and sometimes that was not enough. When you have mounted scopes on about 300+ M77 in a 10 year span, you will find a lot of the bases off. Luckily we had a very good gunsmith with us that could shim the ring, or actually mill out part of the ring. I understand that today most scopes have more wind-age adjustment built into them, which makes it easier to mount scopes on M77 rifles. My last new M77 I bought was a stainless 223, about 1992,  and the scope I installed had plenty of wind-age and elevation.

Add a few more (8-10) for me, no problems at all.

Makes me wonder if the gunsmith was creating work...

I can tell you for a fact, our gunsmith wasn't creating work. Those Ruger  rings and bases were a hell of a job to streighten out. He cussed a lot when I sent him one. As I did most of the scope mounting, I can't tell you if it was the receiver base or the rings that was off. When I couldn't get enough windage, I just sent it over to the smith.During the ten years I was there, I think I had about 5 rifles that were off. That's not really bad out of over 300 scopes mounted. One of the worst combinations was alway the Ruger 77 and the Leupold 3X9 Vari-x 2. That scope just did not have enough W&E adjustment. I was glad when they came out with the Vari-3 scopes.

same company made scope and adjustable rings , now that is cute ! if our scope comes up short on adjustment , we got the rings to fix it !
out of curiosity , why didn't the rifle go back to ruger if the rife was defective ?
