« on: August 13, 2007, 01:47:47 PM »
well, here's the deal the grip panel screws on my lightweight combat commander are stripped,of course not the screw themselves but the part the screw threads into, the one that is supposed to be in the frame.both top screws are buggered.this gun had bianchi wrap arounds on it and i wanted to swap them out for some nice original colt wood, that's when i discovered the problem.
i here there are repair kits available, would appreciate some advice, thanks adker

Order new grip screw bushings and screws from just about anyone selling 1911 parts. No big deal.

I've had grip screw and bushing problems on about every 1911 I've owned. My latest acquisition was a used Colt 1991 compact ACP and it had 3 different styles of bushings on it when I first took the grips off. It now has a set of slim mahogany fully checkered panels with slim bushings and screws from Ed Browns. Order you some ED Brown screws and bushings from Brownells and you won't have to worry about stripping  the bushings or twisting the heads off the screws any more. I've had not so good luck with Wilson's hex head screws, I seem to over tighten them with minimal effort and the heads tend to snap off. Never had that problem with the Ed Brown's. Give them a try.

Most times just running a cleanup tap thru the holes and installing new bushings with a little loctite solves the problem. It's not uncommon!
