What BPS model did I buy?

I was looking through the pawn shops for a single-shot .22 for my great-niece when I spotted a 12ga BPS marked down to $185. Being a lefty and having just received a modest bonus at work, I left the shop with it. The barrel is marked INVECTOR-PLUS BPS SPECIAL STEEL 12GA-2 /3" AND 3" FIELD MODEL 28".  It came with only the choke in the barrel, which has 4 notches. The receiver has factory engraving of pheasants on the left and ducks on the right. I don't find anything like this on the Browning website. The gun is well-used, with some bluing wear and stock dings. Did I get a good deal?

You got the standard, field grade BPS with an improved cylinder choke.  You got the best hardcore waterfowling gun available today, especially if you're a lefty.  The engraving started in maybe the early '90s or late '80s(guess) and is different on the various grades and gauges.  You got a good deal, those guns are usually twice that.  You'll love it.  If more people really tried a BPS they would be the most popular guns in the field.

A nice catch - I once had a 24" straight-gripped BPS.  The only caveat is to be sure and not to short-stroke it - which can happen when a shooter's excited while shooting at game.  :'(

You did really well.  If I were you, I would check MidwayUSA or such for a good set of chokes and a choke wrench.  We have two BPS's (12 and 20) and a Citori 525 Field (12) in the house, and enjoy every one of them. 
I haven' t found anything better (including the vaunted 870) for dove and quail.  $185 is a steal!

   You will love it. I have been using the BPS since 1984 alot of use and no malfunctions.
