Help me pick a 357....
« Reply #30 on: January 06, 2004, 03:35:34 PM »
I hate to hear all the bad stuff about taurus. I bought a slightly used 357 tracker reasonable this summer and shot it alot up to deer season. I haven't had a problem with this one .Our family has ruger firearms and always liked them. My other choice in 357 was going to be the gp100 6''. These two guns are in the same price class but with the taurus you got vent rib ported barrel and 7 shots with great rubber grips in satin stainless for the price of a blued gp. Also with their scope mount you don't have to remove the rear sights.I liked that because if I was out hunting and my dot went bad off it comes and you can shoot the open sights with the base still on.This gun shoots and handles well so I thought they had alot of good ideas.Iv'e shot better than 500 rds in it  so time will tell.

What 357 to buy. And S&W
« Reply #32 on: January 23, 2004, 10:59:18 AM »
I know a lot of you are upset with S&W (and so was I) However on reflection, I doubt that most of the americans that work at S&W were given any say in the matter. I don't think it is of any value to shoot ourselves in the foot.  There are enough top grade guns being imported as it is. We don't need to put our US mfg. out of busness as long as they are selling good products. Let's try to forgive and forget. I did!  I wanted a new light weight revolver to carry around the woods etc. I live in the NC mountians.  OHHH lets be honest I wanted to buy another gun O.K. !!
So I bought a new 357. Model 386 mountian lite. I have the hefter guns and wanted to try one of the new lite weights so I did. As far as Scott is concerned, If you want a new 357 revolver Scott go out and find one that you like and buy it. Everyones taste is different and goodness knows there are a lot of good 357s out there to choose from. If you like a 4in. barrel get one! you can always buy a 6in. on down the road. Then later you can get the 44s the 454s the 450s etc. etc.
As far as ordering guns without seeing them, I gave that up a long time ago. I am as fussy about the finish of the gun as I am about the way it shoots. And out of those I have orderd I was only satisfied with one and that was a T/C. Like GB says you should see it feel it and foundle it before you buy it to be safe. And always rember!

YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TO MANY GUNS!!!!

My walking around the woods gun is a 3" M60.  My shooting a sack full of full house 357 is a GP100.  The GP gets a little heavy on my hip for a bumming around gun.  Years ago I had a 2 1/2" 66 that was a great  all a round woods gun.

my 2 cents

My walking around in the woods, gun is a Smith 57 (41 mag)...Old smiths have great triggers.  There is something about a Smith's  target hammer and target trigger that make my heart beat faster.   The 41   cartridge is a personal choice, I feel one must reload to use it to potential, but winchester is making some new ammo that seems promising.

Say Scott, You never did tell us if you bought a new 357 or what yet.  Did you buy anything yet? Let us all know OK.

Looking for a .357 revolver? Easy.
Price is no object: S&W 627. It is a 5" 8 shot stainless N frame. Beautiful double action trigger. Terrific accuracy. Can't beat it.
Cost Effective solution: Ruger GP100. 4" or 6", your choice. A little rougher than the Smith, but a little work and break-in takes care of that.
The junk solution: any Taurus. IMO, junk.

I've had two Taurus model 608 357 mag revolvers, one with 4" barrel and the other with an 8" barrel.  Let's just say I've made the same mistake twice, but not three times in a row.  Don't buy a Taurus.  The rugers are built like tanks and the smiths fit like a glove.  Take your pick.

Dig through the used bin at your local shops.  I'm sure you can find a S&W M65, M66, M19, M13,M28,M586, M686 or Gp100 some where.  Pick a used gun not abused gun.  Look at the crane and make sure the timing looks good and the gun is tight.  Dry fire the thing a lot.  If the trigger gets hard on a certain part of the cylinder pass on that gun.   Most guns are not shot too much and you can cut your costs down so you can buy ammo and a quality holster.  Remember you need to feed that new smoke pole and get good with it.

i own or have owned smiths, taurus, ,rugers ,and colt. they all do the job, the rest is up to you. i myself prefer ruger
for the dependability, strength, and performance. the colt trooper is close behind. good luck and good shootin, dan

p.s. you might check buds gunshop online for a starting point on price.

I have a Ruger Bisley Blackhawk hunter in 44 that I really like as a dedicated hunting revolver that I have scoped (recently)
but for a just great revolver I really like the 686 6.6" stainless, stellar out of the box trigger
I would also buy a Dan Wesson if I came across a clean used one in the config I wanted
