Flight of Geese
« on: February 01, 2010, 12:24:05 PM »
An old indian taught me this a long time ago..What does it mean when one side of a V of flying geese is longer than the other side?

It means there are more geese on the longer side      ::)

Speaking of which; not too many days back we saw a group (I think properly called a gaggle) of geese flying along in V formation but there was only one leg to the Vee. All of the geese were in a line behind the leader and all angled out like one leg of the Vee but with none angling out the other way.

I've seen them when the vee had way more on one side than the other but that's the first time I ever saw then in a "half vee" formation.

That would be a Ho-Humvee!

I have seen that before Bill. They fly over my house almost every evening. Sometimes in no formation at all. They take off in the evening from somewhere down along lake Ontario about 15 miles north of me and head into the swamp 8 miles south of me for the night.  When the big flights come in it has been estimated at between 20 and 30,000 on the ponds in the swamp. I think it is the Iriquois National Wildlife Reserve. Most of the people around her just call it the Alabama swamp.

I've watched the geese for many years. Not sure but I believe a gaggle of geese is in reference to tame ones on the ground but that a flock is still proper for the wild ones in flight, not sure though. Ever watch em circling Round and round?? I'm told that they are regrouping and changing leaders, putting fresh ones in the front to buck the wind. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

The longest leg is usually the leg that is more downwind of the prevailing wind. The whole purpose of the V, to take advantage of the energy wave created by the lead geese and take advantage of them breaking through the air. That is why you see a lead goose break off and move to the back. The wing beats make a wave pattern down the v if the air is smooth and not turbulent. eddie
