Savage/Stevens 311 dbl brl info wanted
« on: September 24, 2007, 01:04:44 PM »
I have not had any luck finding the date of manufacture for this Stevens 311 I just bought.
It's just marked 311, no letter, 20ga, 28" brls, Tenite (plastic) stocks.
If you have links to information about the 311 doubles I would appreciate it if you posted them in this thread.
Thanks
John

The D.O.M. could be as early as the 40's, but it's most likely mid-50's, IMO.

Eveything I can find online I think points to 40's, no letter stamped on bottom of frame, small 5100 stamped right side frame, 2 3/4" chamber.
What year was the 311 introduced?

You have a Model 5100...basically identical to the 311, but it's a 5100, I have 2.
Best I can tell they were made in the 40's only. When you consider that during 1942 through 1945 there was little to No domestic production of firearms, that really leaves only 6 or so years of production.
Both my 20 and 16 have walnut stocks... I have seen a 410, and others w/ the Tenite stocks...

Left side of frame says Stevens 311, right side has the small 5100.

Mine are actually Springfield by Stevens...I have seen some just marked Stevens, though, those are usually in bigger letters. Mine have relatively small text, because there is more of it.

In a letter I received today from J.T. Callahan, the person Savage Arms gave all their records of old guns to.

He states: " For J. Stevens Arms rifles, pistols, and shotguns, serial number records are not generally available.   Historical info for a particular model, along with the dates of manufacture can be furnished for a charge of $20 per gun."
