I am trying to work up a load right now with some Shockey FFG powder as the T7 FFFG didn't do to well on 460grain .503dia. gonna start around 60-70gr of powder and go from there. Don't use wads though so can't help ya there will report back later
Iwas gonna test today but to much rain. Kurt

peanut,

How much 777 FFFG was you using? My Huntsman loves the .503" diameter 460 grain No Excuses, .518" diameter vegetable fiber gasket wad, and 80 grains 777 FFFG (tapped and settled). With the conicals,  you should get an accurate load somewheres between 65 and 85 grains. The key is getting a measure that allows you to make 5 grain changes, most have 10 grain intervals, and you may not find the best. The very best way to determine the powder load is to convert the volume to weight, 100 grains 777 FFG by VOLUME = 77.7 grains by WEIGHT on my beam scale. This may vary slightly due to different Lot #'s, humidity, granulation.

Don't give up on those 460's, you will love them once you get your charge figured out.

Illhunter,

My 2003 24" SS Huntsman Owners Manual states a conical maximum of 470 grains/80 grains powder for best results. I have heard that some of the newer 26" barrels have a 490 grain maximum, but read YOUR Owners Manual for your particular barrel.

NOTE: These loads are recommended for optimum accuracy. Exceeding them is not likely to increase performance and can result in higher pressures and unsafe conditions. Do not exceed propellant manufacturers' recommendations. Loads recommended for FFG black powder may also be used for Pyrodex RS on a volume basis. This rifle is designed for #209 primers.

Busta I must of missed the part about the fiber wad in your earlier message to me what is the most important part about the wad the size or the material just in case I don't find exactly what you got better to go up or down in dia. I bought to many of them 460 to give up on. I got a 5gr measure probably gonna start at 70gr to get it on paper then work from there as I also have new peep sight on the .50. Kurt

Kurt,

The wads I have are .518" diameter, and .060" thick. I bought mine at Cabelas, but you can purchase them at other places as well. Just try to find something between .510" and .518" so it fills out the grooves.

Rex,

What is the twist rate of your Hawkin? The 460 grainers need a 1-24 to 1-28 twist to stabilize properly. I'm betting your twist rate is 1-48 or 1-66?

I sight in at 100 yards, and can keep 3 shots under 2'' with open sights on good days. With a scope on a good day under 1'', about 1-1/2" on a bad one.

Illhunter,

Here is what I was looking for the other day, but PhotoBucket was down. This is the information from my 2003 24" (Non-Magnum) SS Huntsman Owners Manual. The information for the newer 26" (Magnum) barrels is slightly different, from what I have heard. Always check your Owners Manual first.
