375 h&h

has anyone shot the 375 h&h in an encore?  just a thought but with a price of about $250 per barrel. i could have a real "safari" gun!  what do ya'll think?

I've got the 28" SS fluted PH barrel on a blued Encore frame with the flextech t-hole stock, accuracy is excellent with 270gr Hornadys. Weight is less than a typical "safari" bolt rifle, and it cost less, different strokes. ;) The groups below are both 3 shots each, 81gr on the right and 81.5gr @ 2670fps on the left.

I had a 375 H&H and a 416 Rigby barrel for my Encore. I decided if I wanted a true "safari" rifle I needed a bolt action for a quick follow up shot capability. But I still did a Water buffalo hunt with my 416 Rigby Encore and got a 1800 pound water buffalo with one shot with a 300 gr Barnes X bullet. Just get a good scope for it, something with good eye relief. I had a Leupold 1.5X5X20 VariXIII on mine.

Well, I took an Encore in 375 H&H Magnum on an African safari.  It worked well as a safari rifle since I didn't need a second shot for any of the 6 animals I shot with it.  I'm not sure I'd use a single shot rifle for a dangerous game hunt though.

I have never done an African hunt, but I would think anything that needs that big a gun to put it down is dangerous.

In general, just about all the guns we shoot for deer, etc. are "overkill."  You might be surprised about the 375 H&H Magnum.  It's accurate, the recoil isn't that bad, it's good for all of the usual hunting ranges and since the velocity is moderate and the bullets heavily constructed, it doesn't make huge exit wounds even on light animals and it's enough gun for any animal walking.

I've seriously considered getting a 375 Barrel sometime as backup to the Rem 700 Classic 375 H&H I have (it's a light bolt action 375, the barrel is thinner than their standard barrel for the 375).  I took it Elk Hunting last year, no Elk, but did shoot a mulie with it.  I decided that since my next in power down was a 9.3x57, I was getting a rifle I could hunt just about whatever I wanted along with somewhat common ammunition.  It actually shoots great with Green Box Remington 270 gr.  So I've been toying with an Encore Barrel in case I fly back out and go hunting with my cousin again.  I guess I could just take the 9.3x57 though.
