small bird dog
« on: March 21, 2007, 04:49:42 PM »
Any suggestions. I am apt living for the next fifteen month and this pet would get alot of exercise, yet we would be in an apt(small). I would like to get a dog for birds, but I may just wait until we are done here. I really want a WPG, but that is big dog living and he will need big space. I just kicking around the idea.

Springers also do well with plenty of exercise. I think you may want to hold off if you can and have the dog you want not  one you just settle for. MY parents had a brit and it did well in a small townhouse. Remember housebreaking is much more challenging if you don't have ready access to outside. :) You could also use the time to scout the breed and breederfor a WPG. There aren't that many of them.

I think I will just hold off until I get out of here and back east. I really want a WPG and I am willing to wait.

I think you are wise to wait for the breed you really want. Which strain are you going to go with. The awpgca or thewpgca?

I totally agree with Moxgrove, wait and get the breed you want.  Use the next 15 months to research and find breeders, call them and ask a lot of questions, read training books, find a dog club in the area you're moving, or see if there is a NAVHDA chapter closeby and visit them.  Wes

You might take a look at the Boykin Spaniel. I decided to get a small bird/ house dog 3 years ago.  Started out looking at the English Springer Spaniel and Brittany which I've hunted over and really like. I had an AKC registered  Brittany several years prior and this particular dog was so high strung I had to sell it before it was a year old. As a house dog, it literally drove us crazy.

I didn't know the Boykin even existed until I started researching bird dogs again.  Until recently Boykin breeders elected not to be part of AKC.  Boykin's range in the 30 to 40 lb. range.  They do require a lot of exercise and they love water.  They were originally bred in the Carolinas for turkey and waterfowl.  They're flusher/ retrievers.  Small size made them great to take in a boat for ducks.  Anyway, my Boykin's turned out to be a tremendous pheasant and dove dog. He hunts very close and I've yet to lose a downed bird in the 2 years that he's been a serious hunter.  Haven't taken him for waterfowl.

I just put a down payment for a WPG out of Kansas. Good AKC breeder that won the regional AKC here in Omaha. Nice folks too.
