Effective whitetail range for 357Max and 375Win in 14"T
« on: June 09, 2003, 02:14:32 AM »
A question similiar to what I asked the other day: effective whitetail range for a rested, scoped: TC14[non-ported]357Maximum[probably with a 180gr SSP or 158gr JSP] and TC14[ported] 375Win?I haven't decided what load with the 375Win,I formerly used the Speer 235gr JSP. A farmer friend might be thinking of borrowing either for crop damaging whitetails.
Thanks.

hans:  your 375 should be able to hit as far as you can see through the scope to hold that Contender steady enough to shoot.  If I could hold it steady enough for a 200 yd shot I would take it with the 375.  It certainly has enough wallop for a whitetail at that range.  You may however have a trajectory issue to deal with but the cartridge is certainly capable at 200 yds.

Regarding your 357 Maximum - I would use the 180 or a 200 grain (cast) bullet and depending on velocity possibly limit my shots to 150 yds.  A number of yeara ago I shot the 200 grain round nose flatpoint from the 357 Magnum and was able to topple the ram at 200 yds on the silhouette course and they say that if you can do that the bullet should be able to penetrate.  I believe the 357 Maximum does even better but I think I might limit my shots to 150.  Hope I'm not being too conservative.  Mikey.

Hans,
The 357 maximum with a full house load (1800+fps) is an honest 125 yard white-tail killer. You can keep the bullt's path within 1 inch of the line of sight (or nearly) out to that range. Mine will group in 5/8 of an inch at one hundred yards.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.
