Sometimes I just have to shake my head....
« on: September 17, 2007, 12:06:12 PM »
I posted this in the Alaska forum also....

I was watching the outdoor channel today... while I should of been moose hunting...  and there was one of the hosts of a show, hunting moose in Alaska wiht a guide.  They find some really nice moose up north somewhere (from the trees).  The hunter, who is on TV, so I supposed I know what he is doing, takes four shots on the moose to drop him.  The first one on the show took three shots.  I have never seen, nor heard of a moose taking four shots to drop.

During the hunt, the guide is talking about what nice shots he is taking(I'm still confused) and then after the hunt, he is talking about his nice, lightweight, 270.

What I have to ask is please.  If you are going to be on tv, dont make an idiot of yourself making my moose suffer.  Either take a better shot to drop it (you can take an easy spine shot with a 270 from 60 yards, believe me) or get a bigger caliber.  OR - stay back down in the 48 and hunt deer.

I'm glad it is your "experience of a lifetime," but I find it extremely disrespectful to me when you come to my state unprepared to kill quickly, and then try and make yourself seem like you did great.  If we divide your 60 inch rack by 4 shots, you are only getting 15 inches per shot.  That isn't that good buddy.

I have no problem with the 270 for hunting.  I have no problem with people from outside hunting in Alaska.

I do have a problem with someone who is on a hunting show, and should supposedly have some hunting experience botching a moose hunt, and trying to make it look good.  When they cannot use their selected caliber effectively.

Those "buckmasters" from lower 48 have no idea what a front shoulder shot is,and they always want to pack some new rifle regardless of the caliber cuz thats what they are selling, they must think they are bow hunting cuz those high lung shots a very common on the shows where they come out west to hunt, break bones, puttem down!Just today I talked to one of the .243 packin elk hunters that has never needed anything more, people should be required to think before they can hunt.

I would like to state one thing first.  I am a "the bigger, the better" guy.  I like lots of penetration, I like being able to break through bones and tear through tissue.  This gives me some wiggle room during less than perfect shooting situations in the field.

That being said, I have no problem with guys shooting large game with a .270 or even a .243.  So long as they only take PERFECT shots.  They hold out for that perfect behind the shoulder, double lunger.  Problem is most won't and they get into trouble.  Furthermore, if you are going to shoot a light gun, buy premium ammo and not the $10/box federal stuff.  Get something that will hold together and penetrate if it does hit a bone.

Everything is rarely perfect while elk hunting and the slightest movement or off target shot with a .243 will end in a lost elk.

The guy did get a double lung shot.  Four of them actually.  He just kept shooting.  Like an idiot.  Never thought to aim for say.... the spine... maybe a shot which is going to put him down right away...  Moose didn't even run.. he was wavering...  and the guy just kept shooting..

A front shoulder shot is unheard of among the "experts" on the hunting shows, like I said they all think like they are bow hunting.

I wouldn't judge a guy on just one kill; and, I wouldn't fault someone who kept shooting as long as his moose was still standing.  I'm sure the .270 Win will get the job done on a moose, but I'd prefer something bigger.

I used to enjoy watching The Best of the West on the Men's channel before my provider stopped carrying that channel.  They always went for the high shoulder shot and dropped 'em like sacks of rocks!

Now, now boys....let's not be too hasty.  I shot a moose in NewFi and I shot it 4 times.  Made a nice group on his shoulder too!!!

He stood up from his bed on the side of a low ridge, didn't even know he was there.   The guide said he was a nice moose and that I should shoot so I did at maybe 100yds.  Hit'm in the chest just above the elbow and damn if he didn't start to trot up the hill.  The guide said shoot till he drops cause there's a ravine on the other side. I did with three quick though aimed shots and down he went.  Sure enough, had he crested the ridge there was a steep drop that I'd agree resembled a ravine with thick stunted pine that New Foundland is known for.  BTW, I used a 300win w 180gr NosPart.

If he is running away, and you gotta keep shooting, that is being responsible, and putting your game down.  Shooting a non-moving animal, that is plain irresponsibility.  I know for a fact those bullets out of that 270 are going straight through=major hydrashock=major lost meat.

I didn't get a moose this year, but this guy gets to waste 30 lbs or more meat off of his...  makes sense, since he is on tv.

well it is safer to shoot till it hits the ground, then to let it posibly run off.  especially if he dosent know how well the shot placement was.  hey at least he got the moose, i watched one show where i guy was shooting at a mule deer 350 yds away, shot 2 times and completely missed it, so shot once more and finally hit it, but didnt hit it good and they lost it, now that's something to be pissed off about!

as far as the .270 it is plenty of gun for the task at hand, i mean how many people shoot with a .06 i know i do!
