New England 45-70

Hey  guys need  some  serious  opinions on  a  New  England 45-70
I  have  owned  new  Englads  in  several  calibers   but  this   one has  my  heart   i  am  not  able  to  buy  a  guide  gu  at  this  time  but  have    a  couple  hudred  extra.
1. can  this  rifle handle  this  cartridge?  with  handloads???   or  some  of  garrets  great  ammo??  or  the  cor-bon stuff
  i  dont  want  to  use  the  low  pressue  loadings  and  was  told  this  rifle  can  hande  the heavier stuff

Been shooting mine for the last ten, going on eleven years, and 20 deer later, find it suitable for woods hunting.  Mine will keep about any jacketed 300 gr bullet inside 1" at 100 yds all day.  It's a bit light for shooting real heavy loads all day at the bench from.  Doesn't matter so much when hunting.  Loaded those 300 grainers at velocities from 1800-2400 fps with no problem, except recoil at the high end.  Anymore, I'm back down to 1800 fps.  Kills just as quick at the woods ranges I shoot(10-125 yds), as the higher velocity stuff. Besides, the Hornadys and Sierra's aren't rated for much than that.  Both Garrett and Cor-bon rate the SB-2 as suitable for their loads.  Far as I'm concerned, anything that hold more than one bullet is a mechanism, not a rifle.  They can keep their guide guns.

I'm picking up  my 1st  H&R/NEF single shot  this sat.Handi rifle in 45-70..paid $188.00 for it new. Taking it on my maine bear hunt this sept as a backup to my 45 colt pistol. Cant go wrong at that price...will make a HANDI eastern woods deer rifle also !

Took the NEF 45-70 out today and sighted it in for 1.5 inches high at 50 yrds.I thought it shot very well with some of the shots within the hole from the previous shot.I also thought it kicked more than i expected with the winchester 300 gr jhp load.Shot 22 shots thru it and my shoulder is red and will be bruised tomorrow.Jeez,wonder how those hot garretts would kick ?

I  doubt  it  kicks  as  hard  as  that     or  as  has ard  as  a  new england single  shot  with  3inch mag  slugs

NOTHING kicks harder than a Five pound NEF shooting 3" Mags.  Maybe a six pound 460 does.  To me, the 45-70 doesn't start to really hurt until you're up around 2400 fps with the 300 gr.  Shot 300's behind 51.2 gr of IMR4198 for 2173 fps/28fpe of recoil @15 fps for several years and it wasn't a bad load.  Just too much for velocity for the bullets I was using at the ranges I was hitting.  Went to the 45-70 to get away from the 270 syndrome.

you  are  right  a 5lb new england   is  very roug o  the shoulder  kind  of  silly  as  kids  we  used  to  see  who  could  take  the  most  shots  before  quitting   my  375   couldnt  evn  compare   to  the  way that  thng  felt   i  even  seen  big  boys  quit  after    2  rounds
      i  think  i  am  ging  to  go  with  the  400-405  gr  bulles  as  iv  een old  evenif  startd  out  at  around  1400fps   they  will  still  penetrate  throgh  the  bigest  of  all  hogs   i  am  new  to big  bores  as  i have  always liked  my  old  30-30  and   30-06  but these  45 caliber  gns  are just  amazing

well,it kicks more than my 30-06,my 7mm mag or my 300 wsm with 180 gr supremes.That may not be sayin much.
supposedly these winchester cxp2's are 1850 fps and 2350 ft/lbs-if i remember correct.I think it must be the stock configuration.No bruise,just red yesterday.i'm also 5'11" 235 lbs-no beanpole here....

believe  it  or  naot   i  am  5-8 175   and   i  ave  a  trendous  amount of  recoil  tolrance  i  thin  from all  hose  3inch  mags  fired  out  of  my  sb1- 12  guage  i  have  heard  that  the  300  gr bullets  are  a  tad  light  for  ogs  as  guss he  jackt  i  real  thin  or  omething   seems  like  a  300  bullet  would  punch  through  anything  as  when  I  shot  a  400lb  pig with  my  375 H&H   it  made  instat  bacaon  and  penetrated  the  shoulder  on  both  sides   making  a  big   gaping  exit  wund  on  the  off  side

I have 2 of 'em and I'm not ever trading them. I think your shoulder will give out before the gun will. I have a letter from NEF stating that they rate the strength of their SB2's with the lever actions.
 Mine really like the Hornady 350 RN at about 1700.
