38-55 draws blood....
« on: September 04, 2007, 05:41:17 AM »
My beagle, Cagney,  got in over her head last night and my Target Model was "handi" so I used it.   265 grain lead over 9 grains of Trail Boss in the left eye and exiting out the back of the neck for an instant kill.  Those claws are wicked.

She is too big of a chicken to get hurt but she probably hurt the badger's ears with all her barking...  I intervened before it got ugly.

gotto defend the hound, but you sure don't want to get caught shooting one of those around here they frown on it highly

I am from Indiana and they are protected here too. They are considered vermin in other parts. I have never seen one around here let alone shoot one, but if it was going to be my dog or the badger...it would be a dead badger.

Nice shooting.
My beagle put his head in a badger hole once, heard a growl and ran non-stop over a mile back to the car. When I got back I found him behind the tire under the car.

O.K.  I've had enough of this Beagle Bashing.  To paraphrase one of my favorite philosophers, "A hound's gotta know his limitations."  ;D

He has his moments.
Why one time I witness him stalk, pin, and render a grasshopper in to 3 bloody pieces, without getting scratched. ;)

My beagle's primary purpose in life is to protect the 3 cats that catch gophers in the yard.  Before the beagle , I lost cats to coons, hawks, dogs and coyotes.  She has been a noble yard dog and has trailed a wounded deer or two when called upon.  I am thinking about working her into my coyote calling sets this winter.....

As a lure dog?
Mine will tree squirrels(got 12 last year), jump pheasant and Pats all day long, but could care less about rabbits.
While reading I found that they were originally breed for bird hunting.

Sort of a lure...she is never more than 50 yards from me and I hunt wide open river bottoms.  I have seen dogs used in the west to draw a coyotes attention away from the shooter.

i already use a Mojo hawk decoy,a jack in the box, several digital callers and mouth calls....adding a beagle to the mix is a minor addition.
