Want to modify my guide gun
« on: September 13, 2007, 06:07:29 PM »
I have a 45-70 guide gun and would like to modify it with a larger magazine (maybe 6 shots) and better sights.  Not sure if the large mag is availible but I heard something about it and wondering what sights are generally thought to be the best.

thanks

Check out Wild West. They do great work on triggers, lever loops, sights, caliber conversions, etc. Not sure about the mag extension, but they would know. Sorry, I don't have contact info.

Marlin makes longer magazine tubes, for both the 22" barreled SS and the 26" barreled Cowboy.  Both will extend past the muzzle of your Guide Gun, and will need to be cut down at the front end, and the mag plug screw hole redrilled - not to mention that you'll have to reconfigure a forward magazine hanger in a new, more forward location.
BTW - That's also going to leave your gun with an unfilled dovetail slot, on it's underside between the mag tube and barrel, at the present location of the forward magazine hanger.

There are dovetail plugs that would fill the hole though. Not a big issue for him there.

I did something similar with a Winchester Big Bore.  I purchased a Black Shadow with a 3/4 mag tube and converted it to a full length tube.  The dovetail slot(s) and the old mag tube slot were filled with bedding compound that matched the finish.  You need a magnifying glass to see the difference.  HTH.  Mikey.
