H&R vs Remington SPR18
« on: February 15, 2008, 03:47:40 PM »
This is my first post. After reading all the great reviews on the H&R Handi-Rifles, I have gained permission from my wife (CFO of the house), to purchase a Handi-Rifle in .45-70. I am beside myself with anticipation. That being said, for LATER maybe, I was looking at the Remington SPR18s. How are they compared to a Handi-rifle. I know that Remington doesn't offer the range of calibers that H&R does, but the prices are similar from what I am seeing. I would just like to get your two cents.

Thanks.

I believe that the Remington is made in Russia and the H&R is USA. This may be wrong but I do not think so.

That would be true, H&R is made in Massachusetts, the Spartans are made by EAA Baikal in Russia. The only issue I see with the SPR is it's not offered in 45-70 and scope mounting leaves a lot to be desired.

It looks like all of the Remington SPR18's are of the light barrel variety. At 6 3/4 pounds (more like 7 1/2 pounds with scope) they will make a light weight rig, but we know that the SL barrels on the handi can be finicky. The Remington is a break open design. I seriously doubt if you are going to get accuracy tips on the Remington, like trigger jobs and bedding + the plethora of other good information for a long, long time, if ever.

I have handled the Russian offering and it seems to be well made. Fit-up is TIGHT, and the finish is not so great.

I recently ordered one of their over & under .22/.410s for a friend who changed his mind before the gun even arrived, so I had to return it unfired. It was very well finished and seemed in every way a better built gun than the Savage M-24 combo and came with choke tubes, quite unusual for a .410. They do not offer interchangeable barrels for the SPR-18s and scope mounting can be a problem, but if that doesn't deter you I'd say go for it.

The SPR-18s I've examined seemed very poorly made, poorly finished, & cheap.  The moving parts seemed soft and gritty like a cheap spanish made shotgun.  I was considering buying one until I got a chance to handle it.  I'm a huge Remington fan but I wouldn't own one.  Just my 2 cents.

I have a Baikal over/under 30 06,and its a very tight gun.The double triggers are in the 7 pd. range, but both barrells will shoot 1" to 1 1/2" with Rem Corlokts. The Nef 45 70 will probably out shoot it though.  Digger
