.204 or .223 for Coyote?
« on: August 31, 2007, 10:46:00 AM »
I was looking over the fall line up in the gun store today....and seen both the heavy barrel handi in the .204 and the .223 for the same price of course.  I know the .223 is the stand by for alot of predator hunters...but I am curious if there are pros and cons with going with the .204 instead?

I had a similar dilemma as you. I was looking at the Ultra Varmint with the fluted barrel and trying to choose between the 223 and 204. Well long story short I bought the .243 and love it. I shoot the 55 gr combined tech for coyotes and the 95 gr Combined tech for deer and antelope. Both shoot sub MOA. Don't mean to through another decision into the mix JMHO. ::)

If your just hunting coyotes its a tossup, You didnt mention it, but if your going to take the same gun groundhog hunting then go with the 204, flatter is better.

I agree with Inrut24/7. If you are coyote hunting only then the 223 will be the way to go and much cheaper if you do not reload. But if you are able to take fox and bobcat as well as groundhogs, the 204 would be my bet. The have a CZ American on 204 and it is awesome. Very accurate and no recoil.

Not long ago there was a big to-do about which was the best cartridge for coyotes in another category. There was one stipulation, he wanted to save the hides. Guys were getting bent out of shape thinking theirs was the best choice to kill a coyote and not blow up the hide. The best choice depends on you and how you hunt. Do you shoot 50 rounds a year, 150, 1500? Do you reload? I would say if you do not shoot a lot then get the 204. It has a little longer range than a 223 and the difference in cost is not going t eat you up. If you shoot a lot then get the 223, much cheaper ammo. That applies if reload but really applies if you do not reload. The throat will last longer too before wearing out. Of course again it depends on if you are going to shoot 100 rounds a year or a lot more. A 204 will last a long time if you shoot 100 times a year and do not machine gun them. You can buy 223 ammo any where. I personally like the 223. I think it is a great cartridge and it will handle any predator up to a wolf or varmint wise this side of 300 yards, maybe further if you shoot a lot. Of course the 204 will do the same and a bit further. If you really want a long range gun in a Handi get a 243. I found that most guys (not all) can not hit too well beyond 300 yards any way. This is due to not shooting enough to really know the rifle, trigger technique stinks, scope problem, etc. or the gun is just not accurate enough to shoot beyond 300 yards. They zero in their rifle at 100 yards and then put it away until spring, then wonder why they can't hit any thing beyond 300 yards and 300 is spotty. I wonder why! As you probably already know either one will work, it depends on your preferences and how much shooting you are going to do. That is why we have so many cartridges to choose from and then some guys do not feel there is any thing that will do what they want so they wildcat something up. Good luck to you. ;)

For Coyotes it should really be one of the 17 CF's, however, because they don't make those in a Handi, second best would be the .204.  Larry

22-250 would be a great choice for coyotes and a 223 next.

You just don't understand Coyote hunting.  It is an art, hunting them with a 22-250 or .243 is like painting a car with a roller or hanging a velvet Elvis picture in your living room.    Larry

I have never hunted coyotes but have had both of the calibers in the Handi. I hunt mostly Groundhogs and have found that while the 204 shoots a lot flatter than the 223. We all know that but I will say this I have noticed on Groundhogs past 300 yards that the bullets energy is way down and the knock down power is probably not as good as the 223. I think the 223 would be the better choice here.        Dale

talking best caliber is like talking..chevy..ford..dodge..my point is everyone has a different take...i think a 223 shooting  55 grain soft point's...is a no-brainer...i plan on picking up a 204 somewhere along the way...if a guy reload's the boy's @ predator-master's report good result's with the 204 & 35 grain berger's...it all depend's  on your situation... i  think a 223 is a great coyote caliber with a solid bullet...
