9-7-07 For those who were following this item: Today I received my die back from Lyman - repaired at no charge. Gotta thank Lyman for the good service.

Well heck. I'm sizing some 41 mag brass and all of a sudden the carbide ring comes out of the die body? I've had this die a long time (~ 20 yrs+ /-

) and have sized several thousand cases on it. Added their unbreakable decap pin a few years ago. Now I see Lyman doesn't offer 41 mag dies. This brass wasn't heavily expanded or anything - I was shooting 17 gr 2400, Win Large Pistol Primers, R-P brass, 210 Rem bullet in my Marlin rifle. I had sized about 20 rounds when this failed. This die is fairly old - chrome plated on the outside - I think I bought it direct from Lyman.

I've emailed Lyman about it. Do you think they'll help me out?

If not what do you recommend for a replacement? I'm looking at the Dillon carbide maybe. I have mostly Lyman handgun dies as I have really like their carbide deluxe die packages with several bullet seater stems. Have 1 set of Lee .40SW dies that seem ok but I haven't used them much.

I'm open to suggestions and best places to buy. Thanks

My guess is that given Lyman is a reputable company, they would want to help you out in some way. If not for any reason other than good PR. However, they may not be able to do much since they no longer offer a .41 mag die set. Keep you expectations optimistic.

I use RCBS carbide sizer dies in .38; .357; .44 Mag & .45 ACP. Each were purchased around 1980 and all still function fine. The .38 & .357 sizers have each had several thousand rounds through them.

All of my die sets are RCBS. I have never had a problem with any set and its become more of a tradition that I use them. When I began reloading, the shop I dealt with only stocked RCBS and they came highly recommended. I will admit that I am currently not satisfied with the lock rings on the newer dies sets and have begun replacing them with Hornady lock rings.

Dand, funny thing. I had a carbide ring come out of my 41 lyman die set also. I dont know how old it was cuz it was given to me used. When I contacted Lyman I got a snotty person who insisted that it was probably my fault. Bought a RCBS set of dies. Latter sold the 41.

Why not just clean it all with alcohol and Epoxy it back in, and keep on sizing?? I never tried it, but i don't see why it wouldn't work...

I had that happen to an old and well used RCBS and they gave me a new one. Lyman used to have pretty much no warranty at all or not that they would honor at least. But lately folks have been reporting that Lyman is beginning to back their products so hopefully you'll get a replacement at no cost.

If Lyman can't/won't replace or repair it and you choose not to try the repair yourself, Midsouth sells the RCBS, Lee and Redding sizer dies separately, although their complete sets aren't too much more.

Drillingman - I never thought of fixing it with epoxy. Might be worth a try.
Quick - I was looking at MidSouth. Ordered some stuff from them last month and it came real fast - they ARE good to deal with.

I think all my rifle dies are RCBS and they have done good service for many years.

I've been intrigued by Dillon's die sets - no comments on them?? I load for 5 different 41 mag guns just wonder if dies designed for faster progressive work would do well with near max and max loads that I play with.

Darn have to wait all weekend to wonder what Lyman will do.

Oh well I'm busy loading practice ammo for the 300 win - moose season opens tomorrow but I won't hunt for a week.

IF repair is attempted I think super glue is a better option than epoxy. There is really no room in there to get in the amount of epoxy needed to effect a bond where as super glue doesn't require much. From my personal experience trying to repair mine before sending it to RCBS I'd just forget it and get another die whether Lyman replaces it or you have to buy one. IF Lyman does not that should tell you something about who to buy and not buy from in the future.

Yeah GB I was wondering if I could get any adhesive into the space and wondered if I would get it in straight or cocked a little.

Gunrunner is offering to help me out. Man! I've met the NICEST people on GBO!!!. I think GB deserves credit for making sure his high standards are maintained on this site.

For now I've left the brass stuck in the carbide ring in case Lyman is interested in it.

Lyman answered first thing this morning and asked me to ship my die to them for repair. Sounds good. Would have been nice if they had included the shipping address in their email but I can find it easy. I'll keep folks posted on the Lyman follow up. If their customer service is good they deserve recognition.

I'm thinking these forums and the internet are encouraging companies to watch their P's and Q's with their customer base. Good for everybody.

Yup Dan you were #5 to register when we moved to the newer software and left that which Matt had written for us to use up until that time. Your registration date was:

November 15, 2002, 03:02:18 AM

If I recall correctly we opened up for registrations that day and then moved to the software on Nov. 20.

I had the same thing happen with a set of Lyman dies in .45 ACP some years back. After a letter to Lyman describing the problem, and telling them that this die had resized about 100,000 rounds, they replaced it at no cost. That was about ten years back, and I hope that they still have that level of customer service. Chances are, they will send you a new die!

Gotta thank Lyman for the good service and for supporting their product. They might have polished the decap pin a little too.
